Snell, Bonomolo Jr. Chosen on Day Two of 2025 MLB Draft

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- Alabama’s Kade Snell and Richie Bonomolo Jr. were each selected on the second and final day of the 2025 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Tuesday.

Snell (151st overall I Chicago Cubs) heard his name called in the fifth round while Bonomolo Jr. (224th overall I New York Yankees) was selected in the seventh round. The outfield duo joins first-rounder Riley Quick (36th overall I Minnesota Twins) to encompass the Crimson Tide’s three draftees over the two-day event.

Alabama in the MLB Draft

  • The Crimson Tide finished with three total players drafted during the 2025 MLB Draft, marking nine total draftees in head coach Rob Vaughn‘s first two seasons at the Capstone
  • Snell is the first Crimson Tide player to be drafted by the Chicago Cubs since Colton Freeman (20th round) in 2016, and is the 10th player in program history to be picked by the franchise
  • Bonomolo Jr. becomes the 22nd player in Alabama history to be selected by the New York Yankees, and is the first since Ben Hess was taken 26th overall in 2024
  • Following the picks of Quick (2025) and Hess (2024), the Crimson Tide has produced consecutive first round selections in program history
  • With Monday’s selections, the Crimson Tide’s all-time draft pick total moved to 179 (168 players) since the event’s inception in 1966
  • Alabama has had at least one player drafted for 47 consecutive years dating back to 1979
  • The Tide has had one-or-more players selected in 54 of the 60 MLB Drafts overall
  • UA has seen 73 players selected in the last 15 years
  • A total of 108 players have been taken out of The University of Alabama in the last 25 drafts dating back to 2000
  • Excluding the abbreviated 2020 MLB Draft, Alabama has had 18 pitchers taken in the last seven drafts, including six in the top-five rounds

The 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft began on Sunday, July 13 and ran through Monday, July 14. The two-day event was held in Atlanta, Ga., as part of the All-Star Game festivities and was featured on MLB.com.

All players that have remaining eligibility are able to return to the University to continue their careers at  Alabama if they elect to not sign a professional contract.

Kade Snell (5th Round | 151st Overall | Chicago Cubs)

Outfielder, R-Senior

  • Alabama’s team captain who wore the No. 3 to represent the three pillars of head coach Rob Vaughn‘s program – ownership, toughness and grit 
  • Appeared in 98 games (94 starts) over two seasons with the Crimson Tide
  • Owns a career .347 (125-360) average with 22 doubles, one triple, 16 home runs, 82 RBI, 72 runs scored, and 53 walks to just 36 strikeouts
  • Garnered second team All-America accolades from ABCA/Rawlings and was also named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Southeast Region First Team in 2025
  • Also named a First Team All-SEC outfielder by the league’s head coaches for his senior campaign
  • Started 58 of the Tide’s 59 contests in his final season, posting a team-leading .363 (77-212) average with 13 doubles, a triple, 10 homers, 52 RBI, 49 runs scored and 38 walks
  • Led the Tide in batting average (.363), hits (77) and on-base percentage (.464), having reached base in 53 of his 58 games
  • Played in 40 games (36 starts) for the Crimson Tide in 2024, settling into the designated hitter role midway through the season
  • Put together a .324 (48-148) average with nine doubles and six home runs
  • Added 30 RBI, 23 runs scored, 15 walks and two hit-by-pitch
  • Worked as the Tide’s primary midweek starting pitcher, going 1-0 with a 6.08 ERA (16 ER/23.2 IP) across 10 appearances (six starts)
  • Spent two seasons at Wallace Community College in Dothan where he was named the 2023 NJCAA Division I National Player of the Year
  • Started his career at Auburn where he did not see any action
  • Graduated with a degree in human environmental sciences and was named to the 2025 SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll and the 2023-24 SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll

Richie Bonomolo Jr. (7th Round | 224th Overall | New York Yankees)

Outfielder, Junior

  • An electric outfielder with exceptional on-base skills
  • Started all 59 games in center field for the Crimson Tide during his lone season with the program
  • Maintained a .311 (65-209) average with 17 doubles, two triples, eight homers, 53 runs scored, 52 RBI and 40 walks
  • Led Alabama in walks and sacrifice flies (six) while finishing second in stolen bases (16-17), doubles, triples and sacrifice bunts
  • Named to the All-SEC Tournament team for his performance over two days in Hoover, totaling four hits, including two doubles, four RBI and a stolen base
  • Reached base in 53 of the Tide’s 59 contests, including each of the first 21 games of the season
  • Played two seasons at Wabash Valley College in Mount Caramel, Ill.
  • Earned Second Team All-America honors from Prep Baseball Report following his standout freshman campaign
  • Played in 65 games as a freshman, batting .449 (102-227) with 19 doubles, three triples and seven home runs
  • Also contributed 62 RBI and 83 runs scored while drawing 44 walks and stealing 43 bases in 2023
  • Paced the Great Rivers Athletic Conference in stolen bases while finishing second in hits and runs, and ranking third in the league for batting average and RBI
  • Named to the 2024-25 First-Year SEC Honor Roll
