GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Lou Groza Award has named Trey Smack as one of 20 place-kickers that has made the list of semifinalists for the 2025 season. 

Smack was listed as a finalist in the 2023 season after taking over the position in Week 3 of the season, however, in 2025 he has since retained the primary duties of place-kicker and has continued to excel in the position.

In this fall season, Smack has remained perfect in PATs for his career (96) and adds 23 from this season. He has also made 15 of 18 field goals for the season, with four field goals being 50+ yards. The 56-yard field goal he kicked against LIU in the season home opener (Aug. 30) became the longest in his career, while the 54-yarder against No. 5 Georgia (Nov. 1) helped make him the program leader in 50+ yard field goals made in his career with nine. Smack also set a career high when he kicked a 53 and 54-yard field goal in the same game against Mississippi State on Oct. 18.

On the kickoff line, Smack has amassed 3,119 yards on 49 kickoffs with 37 touchbacks and only one kick going out of bounds.

The group of 20 semifinalists will be narrowed down to a list of three on Nov. 25 with the winner of the award being announced on Dec. 12, 2025. Only one Gator has ever won the award, which was Judd Davis in 1993. Other Gator greats, like Caleb Sturgis did make it as a finalist in 2011 and 2012, and Evan McPherson was a semifinalist in both the 2018 and 2020 seasons.
