Florida Wins in Four at Ole Miss to Conclude Regular-Season Conference Play

OXFORD, MS – The Florida volleyball team closed out regular-season conference play with a four-set win (25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 25-21) over Ole Miss on Friday afternoon inside the Gillom Athletics Performance Center.
 
The Gators conclude regular-season SEC play with an 9-6 record and currently sit fifth in the league, pending the remaining SEC matches played Friday and Sunday.
 
Three Gators finished in double-digits offensively, as outside hitters Jordyn Byrd and Aniya Madkin both posted 11 kills. Middle Blocker Jaela Auguste followed with 10 and hit .400 on the afternoon, while Alec Rothe recorded a .381 clip to finish with nine kills. Freshman Milica Vidacic pitched in six to Florida’s 51 total kills.
 
Alexis Stucky and Taylor Parks shared setting duties this afternoon, with Stucky registering 23 assists throughout sets one and two. Parks subbed in during the second set and closed out the match with 22 assists, adding three kills, three digs and matching her career-best three blocks in the win.
 
Florida totaled nine team blocks with Auguste and Rothe each having four to lead the way at the net. Additionally, four Gators added at least one block to UF’s stat line: Vidacic (2), Byrd (1) and Kira Hutson (1).
 
Freshman libero Lily Hayes was the lone Gator to finish with double digits defensively, pacing the Gators defense with 14 digs. Emily Canaan was one shy with nine, while Ella Vogel (7) and Hutson (6) combined for 13. Rothe and Vidacic both had three, as Stucky (2), Madkin (1) and Byrd (1) totaled five of Florida’s 49 digs.
 
Behind the service line, the Gators tied their four-set season-high of nine aces. Hutson led the way with four aces to tie her career-best and Vogel chipped in two, while Canaan, Hayes and Parks contributed one each.
 
Ole Miss’ Melia Johnson led the Rebels offensive attack with 16 kills for a .367 hitting clip.

How It Happened
Set 1

  • An ace from Hutson kickstarted a 3-0 scoring run which gave the Gators a 7-2 lead and make Ole Miss call an early timeout at the start of set one. Out of the huddle, Rebel errors allowed Florida a 10-4 advantage and middle attacks from Auguste and Rothe followed by back-to-back Byrd kills extended the Gators lead to eight (18-10). Ole Miss settled in with a 7-4 scoring run before a kill from Auguste gave Florida set point (24-17), but the Rebels kept the fight and rallied a 3-0 scoring run before Rothe sealed the 25-20 opening-set win.

Set 2

  • A block from Madkin and Rothe put Florida first on the board, but an ace from Ole Miss capped off a 3-0 scoring run for a 4-3 lead. Vogel responded with back-to-back aces to regain a 6-5 advantage, but the Rebels scored four straight go ahead 10-7 and force a Florida timeout. Out of the huddle, kills from Byrd and Madkin kept the Gators within striking distance, but attacking errors allowed the Rebels a 20-16 lead by heading into the final stretch of set two. Attacks from Byrd kept Florida alive, but ultimately was unable to close to gap as Ole Miss came away with a 25-19 win.

Set 3

  • Florida opened set three with a 5-3 lead after back-to-back kills from Auguste and a block from Parks. Ole Miss notched it up at seven after going on a 3-0 scoring run, but a kill from Byrd followed by an ace from Parks put Florida back in the lead by two. The Gators continued to push the points, going on a 4-0 scoring run with Hayes behind the service line to take a 15-10 lead at the media timeout. Following the break, the Rebels went on a 6-4 scoring run to remain within striking distance, but another block from Parks kept Florida ahead by three (19-16) and forced an Ole Miss timeout. Out of the huddle, an ace from Canaan kept the Gators momentum going, as an ace from Hutson secured the 25-19 win and a 2-1 match lead.

Set 4

  • After exchanging points, Florida was the first to five after a block from Auguste and Parks, but called an early timeout after the Rebels scored four quick points to gain a 8-5 lead. Out of the huddle, the Gators settled in with a 3-0 scoring run to even the score at eight, as the two teams battled point-for-point throughout the middle of the frame. Back-to-back kills gave Ole Miss a 17-15 lead, but Florida responded with a 3-0 scoring run to pull ahead by one (18-17) and forced a Rebel timeout. Following the break, the Ole Miss was the first to 20, but the Gators closed out the set with a 5-0 scoring run with Hutson behind the service line to come away with a 25-21 win.
