Val Gynina Takes Down 19th-Ranked Player In the Nation At ITA Women’s South Sectional Championship

BATON ROUGE, La. – Another day, another top-20 foe vanquished. One day after teammate Lucie Pawlak knocked off the top-ranked player in the nation, Friday it was junior Valery Gynina’s turn to celebrate, as she bested the 19th-ranked player in the country in Tennessee’s Catherine Aulia, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Gynina’s win came in the consolation quarterfinals of the ITA Division I Women’s South Sectional Championships. Earlier in the day, she topped Georgia’s Emma Dong, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 to advance to the quarters. Next up for Gynina is a meeting with Kentucky’s Zoe Hammond.

In the Round of 16 main draw, Gabia Paskauskas upended Florida State’s Amelia Bissett, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3. She squares off against Tennessee’s Leyla Britez Risso in the quarterfinals, Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.

Pawlak bested Tennessee’s Saray Yli-Piipari in her Round of 16 match in the main draw, and is taking on teammate Xinyi Nong Saturday’s in the quarters after Nong beat Georgia’s Sofia Rojas, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Nikola Daubernova dropped a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 decision to Vanderbilt’s Valeria Ray in her Round of 16 match in the main draw.

In the main doubles draw, Daubnerova and Nong advanced past Auburn’s Ave Esposito and DJ Bennett, splitting their two sets 3-6, 7-6, (7-1), before advancing 13-11 in the 10-point tiebreaker. They tackle Vanderbilt’s Bridget Stammel and Valeria Ray, Saturday at 2 pm PT in the semifinals.
