No. 11 Seminoles Scores Late to Down No. 3 Cavaliers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 11 Florida State soccer team scored the game-winning goal with just 80 seconds remaining to beat No. 3 Virginia 3-2 on Thursday night at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Junior forward Jordynn Dudley recorded a brace and had the game-winning assist, while sophomore forward Wrianna Hudson netted the game winner. Their efforts helped the Seminoles (9-2-3, 5-2-2 ACC) earn their first top-10 road win since 2023 and their first victory over a top-three team in the regular season, home or away, since a 1-0 win at No. 2 Virginia on October 6, 2022.

In a matchup between two teams tied for fourth place in the ACC standings on a chilly night in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers (10-2-3, 4-2-2 ACC) took a 1-0 lead just after halftime before Dudley tied it 10 minutes later in the 59th minute. Less than five minutes passed for Dudley to get her second to give FSU a 2-1 advantage. UVA tied it at 2-2 in the 79th minute only for Hudson to win it in the 89th.

The two goals give Dudley her sixth career brace, and the five-point game is the second-most in her career. She extended her point streak to 12 consecutive games, with multiple points in six of the last eight contests, and has a team-best 11 assists and 25 points. Hudson scored her team-leading 11th goal and third game-winner and is second with 22 points

Thursday night marked the third time in four games, all in the last 15 days, that the Seminoles played a team that was and still is ranked No. 3 or higher in the national polls.

With the win, Florida State stretched its unbeaten streak to five in a row against Virginia, and FSU is 13-6-3 vs. UVA since 2011.

The Seminoles out-shot the Cavaliers 15-11 with an 8-5 edge in shots on target. The visitors earned seven corner kicks and the home side had five, while fouls were 11 for Virginia and nine for Florida State. Dudley led all players with six shots and three shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Kate Ockene made a career-best two saves and the defense cleared another ball off the line. UVA’s keeper stopped five shots.

FSU registered the first shot of the game just 31 seconds in, which was blocked. The defense then prevented a shot as Virginia had its chance in the final third, including off a corner.

The visitors almost made it 1-0 in the 22nd minute, but a header went wide, and a tackle in the penalty area in the 33rd minute prevented a one-on-one shot. Meanwhile, the defense continued to limit the Cavaliers’ chances of good looks on net.

In the final minutes of the first half, a header was directed just over the crossbar off a free kick before the defense blocked a shot and cleared one off the line to keep it goalless after 45 minutes.

Florida State had six shots and Virginia had three in the opening half. Both teams registered a shot on goal and each side had three corners.

UVA took a 1-0 lead at 48:16 to open the second half.

Ten minutes later, at 58:15, FSU and Dudley responded. Several passes outside the 18-yard box led up to the goal before senior midfielder Kameron Simmonds fed the ball in to junior midfielder Yuna McCormack, unmarked and on the run. McCormack got the ball at the edge of the six-yard box and quickly centered it to Dudley, who was racing in with a defender at her side. From three yards out, Dudley left no doubt with a hard-struck shot into the back of the net.

Florida State and Dudley wasted little time making it 2-1 at 63:05. From their own end of the field, senior midfielder Sophia Nguyen sent a long pass upfield towards Dudley and Hudson. On a ball that originally bounced off a defender’s head, Dudley got to it just inside the penalty area to the left of the penalty spot. On her second touch, Dudley secured the brace with a rocket into the far corner of the goal.

Virginia answered to tie the game at 2-2 at 78:35.

After FSU had several chances blocked off a corner, and Ockene made a nice save, the Seminoles regained a 3-2 lead at 88:40.

It was a long ball in from near the UVA bench that found Dudley at the edge of the penalty arc. The ball then bounced to Hudson at the penalty spot, she dribbled forward once and scored into the right corner of the goal to beat a diving goalkeeper, four yards off her line.

The visitors had nine shots to the home side’s eight in the second half, with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Corner kicks were 4-2 for Florida State.

FSU returns home for its final regular-season home game on Thursday, October 30, against RV Wake Forest. Kickoff at the Seminole Soccer Complex is at 6 p.m. ET on the ACC Network, and the team will honor its six seniors prior to the game.
