QUICK KICKS
Tilt in Tiger Town
No. 15 Georgia closes its non-conference slate with a short trip to Clemson Sunday evening. This is the 15th all-time matchup between the schools, ranking second to Georgia State (19) as Georgia’s most-common non-conference opponent. Georgia is looking to continue a three-match unbeaten streak against Clemson, dating back to an upset 3-1 win in 2021 at the Turner Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs and Tigers tied twice in the 2023 season, first in a regular season tilt in Athens, followed by a dramatic NCAA Round of 16 match in Clemson. Georgia appeared to be on its way to the Elite Eight as All-American Croix Bethune scored in the 84th minute, but a Tiger equalizer with 90 seconds remaining sent the match to extra time. Despite a series of chances for the Bulldogs, they would eventually fall in penalties, 5-3. Georgia has only won once before at Historic Riggs Field: a 2-1 victory on Sept. 18, 2009, in which the Bulldogs were coincidentally also ranked 15th, and the Tigers were unranked.
Clemson carries a three-match unbeaten streak into Sunday’s contest, including a scoreless tie against No. 12 South Carolina on Aug. 28. The Tigers also played No. 18 Ohio State to a 1-1 draw in the season opener in Columbus. Freshman forward Juju Harris joins Georgia’s Summer Denigan as two of the nation’s top clutch performers, with both ranking top-three nationally in winning goals. Sunday also marks the non-conference finale for Clemson, who will host No. 1 Stanford next Thursday in its ACC opener.
Familiar Faces
Clemson’s roster features a trio of players with ties to the Georgia program. Junior midfielder Christian Brathwaite began her career as a Bulldog in 2023, appearing in 20 matches with nine starts as she helped the program win its first SEC Tournament title. Sophomore midfielder Anna Castenfelt was a member of the Bulldogs in the 2024 spring exhibition season but transferred to Clemson before playing in any regular season matches. Finally, graduate defender Baleigh Bruster is the sister of former All-SEC defender Kayla Bruster, who anchored the Georgia backline from 2017-21.
Under the Weather
Georgia is looking to rebound from an exhausting 1-0 loss to Wyoming Thursday evening at the Turner Soccer Complex. Following a three-and-a-half-hour weather delay, the Bulldogs and Cowgirls finally took to the rain-drenched field at 10 p.m. Wyoming notched the lone score of the evening in the 11th minute as Addison Keen forced a turnover and passed ahead to Alyssa Glover for the goal. Georgia controlled possession for much of the evening, earning a season-high 11 corner kicks and outshooting Wyoming, 23-8 (6-3 SOG). Nonetheless, the Bulldogs were stifled by the Cowgirl defense and six saves from keeper Haley Bartel, as well as the net itself with four shots hitting the crossbar or post.
Townes for the Tie
On a balmy summer afternoon on the Palouse, Georgia earned a 1-1 tie against Washington State Aug. 31 in Pullman. The Bulldogs controlled the pace of play, outshooting the Cougars by a 12-5 margin (5-2 in SOG). Freshman Mya Townes scored her first career goal, a 69th-minute equalizer set up by a great assist from teammate Sage Glover. Wazzu opened the scoring in the 12th minute, snapping a four-match shutout streak by the Georgia defense. The Bulldogs nearly earned a win in the final 90 seconds as Summer Denigan’s free kick was on line, but stopped by WSU keeper Keara Fitzgerald to thwart a sixth-straight winning goal for the Bulldog midfielder.
