Shelton and Hidalgo Set to Represent the Gators in the US Open Singles and Doubles Tournament

Last Updated: August 24, 2025By

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The final Grand Slam tournament of the year starts on August 24 and two Gators have qualified for a singles and doubles main draw.

Ben Shelton comes into the final majors of the season ranked No. 6 in the ATP. The 22-year-old saw a significant jump in rankings after starting the year ranked No. 21 in the world. However, collecting a winning record of 35-17 and his first ATP Masters 1000 title at the National Bank Open just three weeks ago has allowed him to jump up 15 rankings passing players like Novak Djokovic, Alex de Minaur and Holger Rune.

Although Shelton’s US Open run initially began during the mixed doubles portion of the tournament on Tuesday, August 19 with Taylor Townsend as his partner, Shelton’s singles run will begin on Sunday, August 24. Shelton and Townsend made it to the Quarterfinals of the mixed doubles tournament after upsetting the fourth ranked duo of Rune and Amanda Anisimova in Round One. However, the pair fell to Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison in the quarters.

For the singles tournament, Shelton was placed in ATP No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz’s quarter of the bracket meaning the two will face off in the Quarterfinals of the US Open if both win all their matches leading up to it.

Diego Hidalgo also enters the US Open but in the men’s doubles portion of the tournament. The main draw for men’s doubles does not come out until August 27, so it is unclear as to who Hidalgo’s partner will be for the event. Hidalgo is ranked No. 80 in doubles and has a record of 4-6 on the ATP tour but is 28-16 across all the tournaments he has competed in this year. Hidalgo has also collected 3 Challenger Tour titles.

The singles tournament for the US Open begins on August 26, with Shelton’s first match being at noon EST against US Open qualifier Ignacio Buse. The doubles portion of the tournament begins on August 29, 2025.

All matches can be watched on ESPN, ESPN+, ESPN2 and ABC networks or they can also be viewed on the Tennis Channel.
