GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway was one of 102 athletes named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list.

The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award was created in 2012 to recognize the top offensive player in Division I college football who either graduated from a high school in Texas or currently plays college football in Texas. The award was named after Earl Campbell, who not only graduated from John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas but went on to play football at the University of Texas. In his senior year with the Longhorns, Campbell led the nation with 1744 yards rushing, 19 touchdowns, and went on to be the first Heisman Trophy winner for the University of Texas.

Coming to Florida from Willis, Texas has made Lagway eligible for the award nomination and is one of 31 quarterbacks to be named to the list.

In his freshman year, Lagway played in 12 games but started in seven earning a 6-1 record when starting and helping lead the Gators to an overall 8-5 season record. In those 12 games, Lagway totaled 1915 yards on 115-of-192 passes getting a 59.9% completion, recorded 12 touchdowns and rushed 51 times for 101 yards. Lagway also tied Chris Leak for most wins as a true UF freshman quarterback and led all FBS true freshmen with a 154.9 passer rating while ranking third among all FBS passers with a 95.8 passing grade on deep balls.

The watch list will be narrowed down to a group of 16 or fewer semifinalists in November, and then to a group up to five finalists in December. The winner of the award will also be announced in December and is selected by a committee of broadcasters, commentators, journalists, fans and previous winners of the award.
