Singles Qualifiers and Mixed Doubles Tournament Kickoff the US Open for Two Gators
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The start of the US Open is coming soon, with the first match being played Sunday, Aug. 24, 2025. While many players already have a spot in the main draw for the last Grand Slam Tournament of the year, many more are still competing to qualify for a chance to play in one of the four majors.
Former Gator Oliver Crawford is one of those players competing for a chance to play at the US Open. This is not Crawford’s first major tournament for this season, also having competed in the Round of 128 in Wimbledon where he was defeated by Mattia Bellucci (7-6(2), 3-6, 4-6, 4-6).
Crawford will compete against Alex Bolt from Australia in the first round of qualifiers, and if he wins the contest will move on to face either Garrett Johns or Colton Smith in the second qualifiers round. To make it into the main draw for the tournament, Crawford will have to win the second and third round of qualifiers to make it into the Round of 128.
Crawford plays in the first round of qualifiers today following the matches of Jule Niemeier against Daria Saville for the women’s qualifiers and Jason Kubler and George Loffhagen for the men’s qualifiers, the first of which began at 11 a.m. EST.
Ben Shelton also begins play today at the US Open but in the mixed doubles portion of the tournament, where he has been paired off with fellow American Taylor Townsend. The duo will face off against Amanda Anisimova and Holger Rune. The winner of the match will play back-to-back matches, as the Mixed Doubles Round One and Two are played today. The two teams will face off after 1:30 p.m. EST due to other matches being played prior to their start.
Crawford and Shelton’s matches can both be watched on ESPN+.
