ELSBERRY, Mo. – Evacuations are underway and swift-water rescues are taking place northwest of St. Louis after torrential rain led to flooding early Sunday morning.

According to Lincoln County Emergency Management officials in Missouri, the city of Elsberry and Lincoln County have declared a state of emergency due to the ongoing flooding.

“Flash flooding is currently impacting the City of Elsberry and surrounding areas,” officials said in a Facebook post.

Officials said Lincoln County Emergency Management requested the activation of the Region C Boat Rescue Strike Team.

“Please avoid the area,” officials said. “Water rescues and evacuations are actively underway.”

The Winfield Foley Fire Protection District (WFFPD) said its swift-water rescue team was deployed to Elsberry to assist with the state of emergency and flooding.

Officials said the WFFPD has been actively working alongside other agencies on rescuing people from the extreme flooding conditions.
