Williams is FSU-Record Fourth Draft Pick in Top Three Rounds
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State baseball junior center fielder Max Williams was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the third round with the 78th overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday evening.
Williams was the fourth FSU player selected in the opening three rounds on Sunday, the most in team history. The Seminoles also set a program benchmark earlier in the draft with three selections in the first two rounds. The team’s four picks in the first three rounds is tied for second-most among all NCAA programs and the most in the ACC.
To begin Sunday’s draft, junior left-handed starter Jamie Arnold was the 11th overall pick by the Athletics, junior shortstop Alex Lodise was the 60th overall selection by the Atlanta Braves and junior right-hander Cam Leiter was drafted 65th overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Ormond Beach, Florida, native, Williams is the seventh FSU player ever drafted by the Marlins and first since Brett Roberts was picked in the 16th round in 2022. Williams is the first to be selected inside the top nine rounds and joins Taiwan Easterling, drafted in the 31st round in 2010, as the only two outfielders picked from Florida State by the Miami ballclub.
Williams was named to the Southeast All-Region Second Team and was a Second Team All-ACC selection in 2025.
While starting all 57 games he appeared in, Williams was second in the ACC with 19 home runs in 2025. He hit .316 with 74 hits, nine doubles and 53 RBI in 234 at-bats. Williams registered 140 total bases and scored 47 runs with a .598 slugging percentage while walking 19 times and stealing two bases on three attempts. He boasted a fielding percentage of .991 with 111 putouts and three assists.
In his two-year FSU career, Williams played in 121 games with 109 starts. He hit .314 with 144 hits, 33 home runs, 20 doubles and four triples in 459 at-bats. Williams drove in 99 runs and scored 104 with a .590 slugging percentage and a .384 on-base percentage. He drew 38 walks and had 271 total bases with seven stolen bases in nine attempts.
As a freshman in 2023, Williams got his collegiate career started at Alabama and played in 18 games with three starts. He hit .320 with three doubles, four runs and seven RBI.
Williams helped lead Florida State to its first College World Series berth in five years in 2024 and a Super Regional appearance and FSU’s first ACC runner-up finish in 11 years in 2025.
The 2025 MLB Draft continues with rounds 4-20 on Monday, July 14, beginning at 11:30 a.m. on MLB.com.
MLB teams have until Monday, July 28, at 5 p.m. ET, to agree to deals with players they draft out of four-year colleges and high schools.
