No. 9 Seminoles Rally to Even Super Regionals at No. 8 OSU
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 9-seed Florida State baseball team scored three unanswered runs to beat No. 8-seeded Oregon State 3-1 on Saturday night to force a decisive game three of the Corvallis Super Regional at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
After OSU claimed the best-of-three-opener on Friday afternoon and FSU won game two on Saturday, the two teams will play a winner-take-all third game on Sunday at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on ESPN2. The winner will advance to the 2025 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
The Seminoles (42-15) trailed 1-0 in the first inning, but responded with the tying run in the third, the go-ahead score in the seventh and an insurance tally in the eighth. The Beavers (46-14-1) had the tying run on base in the eighth and at the plate in the ninth, but a double play halted the eighth-inning threat and three consecutive strikeouts ended the ballgame.
With the victory, FSU improves to 4-1 in the 2025 NCAA Championship. Florida State is 211-135 all-time in NCAA postseason games and 21-24 in Super Regionals.
Both teams had six hits in the contest, with OSU committing one error. All three of FSU’s runs came with two outs, including the last two with a 3-2 count.
Junior left-handed starter Jamie Arnold had another strong start on the mound and held Oregon State to one run on six hits in 6.2 innings. He struck out nine and walked just one. In relief, junior right-hander Maison Martinez got a strikeout to end the seventh as he earned the win. Sophomore righty Peyton Prescott pitched the final 2.0 innings and did not allow a hit with four strikeouts and a walk. Prescott collected his third save of the campaign.
Offensively, junior center fielder Max Williams led the team with a game-high-tying two hits. He notched an RBI, the game-tying hit in the third, and scored FSU’s run in the eighth.
Oregon State, the visiting team on the scoreboard, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out single. Arnold got a flyout to end the inning and leave two runners on. The FSU southpaw stranded two more in the second and retired the final three in the third after the leadoff batter reached.
Florida State tied it in the third at 1-1. Junior catcher Jaxson West reached on a fielding error to lead off the inning and scored from second on a two-out single through the left side by Williams.
Arnold retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth, part of nine in a row he set down. He left one on in the sixth and exited in the seventh with one on and two outs. Martinez relieved Arnold and got a strikeout to end the threat.
The Seminoles took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh, as junior right fielder Gage Harrelson singled on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. That drove in redshirt freshman pinch hitter James Hankerson Jr. from second, who reached on a fielder’s choice.
In the eighth, Prescott entered the game and got a strikeout and a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning after a leadoff walk.
FSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning thanks to West, who drew the bases-loaded walk, again on a 3-2 pitch with two outs. The free pass scored Williams, who led off the frame with a single.
In the ninth, Prescott walked the leadoff batter but struck out the next three, two of them pinch hitters, to seal the win with the tying run at the plate.
Game three is on Sunday, June 8, at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT, on ESPN2, with a spot in the eight team College World Series on the line.
