No. 9 FSU Edged in Super Regional Opener at No. 8 OSU
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 9-seed Florida State baseball team suffered a 5-4 loss in 10 innings at No. 8-seeded Oregon State in the first game of the Corvallis Super Regional in Corvallis, Oregon, on Friday afternoon.
The defeat in the opening game of the best-of-three series snapped FSU’s six-game NCAA Super Regional win streak. The two teams will return to Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on Saturday for the series’ second game, set for 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. A Florida State win will force a third and decisive game on Sunday.
The Seminoles (41-15) scored four runs on 11 hits while the Beavers (46-13-1) scored their five runs on 13 hits. Neither team committed an error. Three of FSU’s runs came with two outs.
Florida State falls to 210-135 all-time in NCAA postseason games and 20-24 in Super Regionals.
Redshirt junior left-handed starter Joey Volini held OSU to one run on seven hits in 6.2 innings. He struck out eight and did not walk a batter while throwing 104 pitches. Volini pitched into the seventh for the sixth time this season and the first since May 3 as his 104 pitches is one short of a career high.
Freshman first baseman Myles Bailey homered in the sixth inning. His team-high-tying 18th home run was his seventh in the last six games. Bailey was one of eight starters with at least one hit and one of four with an RBI. Freshman catcher Hunter Carns was one of two Seminoles with two hits, and he also had an RBI and a run scored.
FSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI double by Carns. It scored junior second baseman Drew Faurot, who walked.
After Volini retired the first six batters he faced, he was aided by a great play to throw a runner out at home in the third to avoid a run from scoring. On a double down the left field line, junior shortstop Alex Lodise turned the relay from sophomore left fielder Chase Williams, and Carns applied the tag.
Oregon State tied the game in the fourth at 1-1 on a one-out double to left-center. Volini got a strikeout to end the fifth and leave runners on the corners.
Bailey gave FSU the lead back at 2-1 in the sixth on his leadoff home run to right-center. Volini followed with a 1-2-3 bottom half.
The Seminoles made it 3-1 in the seventh on a run-scoring single with two outs by junior center fielder Max Williams. That brought home Carns, who led off the frame with a single.
After a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh, Volini got back-to-back strikeouts. Redshirt senior right-hander Joe Charles then came in and got a flyout to end the inning.
Florida State added one more in the eighth to make it 4-1. Again with two outs, redshirt freshman designated hitter Brody DeLamielleure singled in junior second baseman Drew Faurot. Charles followed with a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.
Oregon State tied the game at 4-4 in the ninth. With the bases loaded, a wild pitch scored the first run before a two-RBI single.
In the 10th, the Beavers won it on a bases-loaded single to center.
