DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 6-ranked and second-seeded Florida State baseball team opened the 2025 ACC Championship with a 14-7 victory over seventh-seeded Duke in the quarterfinal on Friday afternoon in Durham, North Carolina.
With the win, FSU advances to the ACC Championship Semifinal on Saturday, May 24, at 5 p.m. ET. The Seminoles will play the winner of today’s final quarterfinal matchup between third-seeded North Carolina and 14th-seeded Boston College. The championship game at Durham Bulls Athletic Park is set for Sunday, May 25, at noon.
The Seminoles (38-13) scored 14 runs on 18 hits in the win, their highest-scoring ACC Championship game since a 17-5 victory in the 2004 title game over Georgia Tech in Salem, Virginia. FSU has scored more than 14 runs only four other times at an ACC Championship since its first game in 1992.
Friday’s offensive barrage was fueled by an eight-run third inning, where Florida State sent 12 batters to the plate and hit for the cycle as a team. That turned a 3-2 lead into an 11-2 advantage, and the Garnet and Gold never looked back.
Freshman first baseman Myles Bailey hit two home runs for his third multi-homer game of the season. It was his 13th and 14th long balls of the year as part of a four-hit, four-RBI day with three runs scored. Junior catcher Jaxson West hit his second homer of the season in the second.
Junior shortstop Alex Lodise, the ACC Player and Defensive Player of the Year, joined Bailey as one of six players with multiple hits, as he had two with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior right fielder Gage Harrelson also had two hits and two RBI while redshirt freshman designated hitter Brody DeLamielleure notched three hits and three runs scored with an RBI.
Junior left-handed starter Jamie Arnold got the win to improve to 7-2 on the season. In 5.0 innings, he allowed five runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Redshirt senior righty Joe Charles got the save, his third. In 3.1 innings, he held the Blue Devils (37-19) to one run on one hit with three strikeouts and no walks in the final 3.1 innings.
Florida State took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, as Bailey notched an RBI single and a fielder’s choice brought in Lodise.
Duke answered to tie it at 2-2 in the top of the second on a two-out, two-RBI double, but the Seminoles quickly answered to regain a 3-2 lead in the bottom half thanks to West’s home run. It was a one-out shot on an 0-1 pitch to center.
FSU then scored eight in the third, its second-biggest single inning of the 2025 campaign. Sophomore left fielder Chase Williams got the scoring going with a two-RBI single, and DeLamielleure doubled in one off the bullpen. The last five runs all came with two outs. Lodise tripled home two more, followed two pitches later by an RBI single off the bat of junior center fielder Max Williams. Bailey capped the inning with his first home run of the day, a two-RBI shot to right.
The Blue Devils got two back in the fourth to cut into the lead at 11-4 on a two-run homer, but again Florida State responded. This time with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a sac fly by Harrelson to make it 12-4.
After a scoreless fifth, Duke scored two in the sixth, but again the Seminoles answered with one in the bottom of the frame. To make it 13-6, Harrelson singled in DeLamielleure.
Bailey led off the seventh with a monster blast to right. At 118 miles-per-hour off the bat, the ball sailed 468 feet over the seats in right field.
Charles retired the side in order in the eighth. He got a flyout to end the ninth and seal the win with one run scoring.
