BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 2 Florida State baseball team secured its 10th series win of the season and sixth in eight ACC weekends with a 5-1 victory at Cal on Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, California.
The Seminoles (36-11, 16-8 ACC) scored single runs in the middle three innings and added two insurance tallies in the eighth, all while holding the Golden Bears (20-29, 7-20 ACC) to a single fifth-inning run and just one hit in 10 at-bats with runners in scoring position. Four of FSU’s five runs came with two outs.
Sophomore third baseman Cal Fisher had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored to extend his career-long hit streak to 14 games. He scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning and drove in the eventual winning run in the sixth. Junior center fielder Max Williams had two hits and a run scored and sophomore left fielder Chase Williams had a hit and two RBIs.
On the mound, sophomore left-handed starter Wes Mendes earned the win to improve to 6-2 on the campaign. In 5.0 innings, he allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Sophomore righty Peyton Prescott followed with 2.1 scoreless innings with two hits and four strikeouts, while redshirt senior Joe Charles did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings. As he earned his second save of the season, he struck out three with no walks.
FSU scored its five runs on eight hits with one error. Cal was held to one run on five hits with two errors. UC stranded 11 runners on base.
The series-clinching win – Florida State’s last regular-season road game – came on a cool but sun-filled day at Stu Gordon Stadium. After warmer Friday and Saturday contests, Sunday featured strong winds blowing in from right.
Mendes left two on in the first and struck out the side in the second. He needed just 11 pitches to get out of the third with a two-out single.
The Seminoles scored the game’s first run in the fourth inning on a two-out double from junior second baseman Drew Faurot. The hit to right-center scored Fisher, who drew a two-out walk.
Florida State doubled its lead to 2-0 in the fifth, again with two outs. Junior shortstop Alex Lodise singled through the left side to plate freshman catcher Hunter Carns.
Cal cut its deficit in half with a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth. However, the home team could not get any closer, as Mendes got the final out of the inning on a pop-up in foul territory.
FSU quickly got the run back when Fisher doubled home Max Williams, after the junior led off the frame with a double of his own.
Prescott relieved Mendes after the leadoff batter reached in the sixth, and he got back-to-back strikeouts to leave a pair on. Prescott then stranded another two in the seventh before the Seminoles added some insurance.
In the top of the eighth, Chase Williams singled home freshman first baseman Myles Bailey and Fisher. The two-out base hit extended the lead to 5-1.
Charles relieved Prescott with two on and one out in the eighth and got out of the jam with a flyout and a lineout. He struck out the side in the ninth to finish off the win and earn the save.
