No. 23 Alabama Baseball Drops First Game of Friday’s Weather-Affected Twin Bill
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 23 Alabama baseball dropped the first game of Friday’s scheduled doubleheader against No. 6 Georgia, 19-3, before the second contest was suspended by rain after a 70-minute delay, with the Crimson Tide holding a 6-2 lead with one out in the top of the fifth inning.
Game two of the series is tentatively scheduled to resume on Saturday, with the series finale beginning approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the resumed contest.
From Head Coach Rob Vaughn
“The start of the day was great. I thought we started well. Tyler Fay gave up a homer in the first, but then he executed and was really good in the fourth. But we knew that if you start to give those guys free bases, you’re in trouble, and that was really the story of the first game. That offense over there is really hard to stop when it gets rolling, and they made us pay. But our group is tough and reset after that game. They punched us for two early runs and we played great after that. We’ll turn our attention to tomorrow and hopefully we’ll get a break in the weather to come out and finish this one and get the third game started eventually. So, I’m proud of the way we bounced back, but we just gave up too many freebies that turned into runs.”
GAME ONE
No. 23 Alabama dropped the series opener to No. 6 Georgia, 19-3, in the first game of Friday’s twin-bill. The Crimson Tide surrendered a season-high six home runs in the defeat, including three blasts in the seventh inning. The game was called after seven innings due to the run-rule.
Tyler Fay (0-2) was tagged with the loss in his fifth start of the campaign, allowing five runs on four hits in his 4.0 innings of work, walking three and recording four strikeouts. The redshirt sophomore faced five men in the fifth inning, but did not record an out. Matthew Heiberger and Austin Morris gave up three earned runs apiece, though Morris struck out three Bulldogs. Bobby Alcock surrendered seven runs (two earned), striking out two in his 1.0 inning pitched.
The Crimson Tide offense managed to post three runs on just four hits, highlighted by Kade Snell’s three-run double in the third. Will Hodo, Will Plattner and Garrett Staton accounted for Alabama’s three other base knocks, but the Crimson Tide did work five walks in the contest.
How It Happened
- T1 | A solo shot to left opened the scoring for the Bulldogs (1-0, Georgia).
- B3 | Consecutive one-out walks by Will Plattner and Bryce Fowler brought Justin Lebron to the plate, who reached base on a fielder’s choice. A fielding error allowed Fowler to safely advance to second base, loading the bases for Kade Snell, who quickly lined a double to the right-center field fence to clear the bases (3-1, Alabama).
- T5 | Four walks and four hits, including a three-run home run and a solo shot, allowed Georgia to add eight runs to its tally (9-3, Georgia).
- T6 | The visitors struck to score three two-out runs (12-3, Georgia).
- T7 | A trio of long balls and an error allowed the visitors to tack on seven more runs (19-3, Georgia).
Postgame Notes
- Kade Snell extended his hitting streak to 12 games on Tuesday, going 22-for-44 (.500) with three doubles, one triple, four home runs, 19 RBI and 10 walks in that stretch
- Snell’s 12-game hitting streak is the longest by an Alabama player this season, surpassing 11-game hitting streaks by Bryce Fowler and Will Hodo
- Snell also recorded his 14th multi-RBI outing of the season
GAME TWO
The Crimson Tide raced to an early 4-2 lead after one inning of play, adding two more runs in the fourth before the game was halted due to rain in the top of the fifth. When play is resumed, Georgia’s Kolby Branch will be at the plate facing a 1-2 count with one out in the top of the fifth with Tre Phelps standing on third base. The game will tentatively return to action on Saturday, with game three set to begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the resumed contest.
How It Happened
- T1 | Back-to-back singles to open the game came around to score thanks to a wild pitch, an RBI groundout and an RBI single (2-0, Georgia).
- B1 | After Bryce Fowler dropped a leadoff single into right-center, Justin Lebron hit a towering two-run blast off the scoreboard in left. Kade Snell and Richie Bonomolo Jr. followed by each working a walk before a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position. A high sacrifice fly to deep center field scored Snell and advanced Bonomolo Jr. to third. Jason Torres punctuated the four-run first, flaring a base-hit to left-center to bring in Bonomolo Jr. (4-2, Alabama).
- B4 | After Brady Neal walked to open the frame, Bryce Fowler lifted a two-run homer that snuck inside the right field foul pole (6-2, Alabama).
