BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 9 Florida State softball team (44-8, 18-3) fell to No. 15 Virginia Tech (40-10, 18-6) in an 8-6 back-and-forth affair in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.

FSU clinched the ACC Regular Season Championship on Friday and will be the No. 1 overall seed in next week’s ACC Tournament and willl face the winner of Georgia Tech and Cal on Thursday morning at 11 a.m. FSU currently stands fourth in the RPI with a 44-8 record.

The Noles wasted no time getting on the board as Isa Torres hit a leadoff home run in the first inning to put the Noles up 1-0. Julia Apsel got the start for the Noles and struck out the two batters she faced and recorded a fly out to retire the Hokies in order.

The Noles got back to work in the second as Amaya Ross led off the inning with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an error. Angelee Bueno drove her home on an infield single. A couple of walks put runner on first and second for Torres who picked up her second RBI of the game to put the Noles up 3-0.

The Hokies cut into the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second. Katie Dack led off the third inning with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a groundout. Dack eventually scored on a passed ball to put the Noles back up two.

The Hokies got one run back on a solo shot in the bottom of the third and tied the game on a double in the fourth. Virginia Tech kept the pressure on with a three-run fifth inning for its first lead of the series.

FSU responded as two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Torres who delivered with a single to left to cut the lead to one. The Noles looked to have tied it up as Jahni Kerr hit one up the middle, and the defender just kept her foot on the bag to prevent the run from scoring. Torres was originally ruled safe, but the play was overturned.

Va Tech added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Michaela Edenfield drew a two-out walk in the seventh, but that was all the Noles got.

Torres had a great day at the plate going 3-for-4 with four RBI for FSU.
