The Postseason Begins For Wiggins and Seminoles against Cal on Wednesday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It doesn’t happen very often.

Statistically, it’s only happened 16 times in school history since Florida State Hall of Famer Sam Cassell first accomplished the feat against Wake Forest during the Seminoles’ first season in the ACC.

It is scoring 31 points or more in an ACC game for the Seminoles.

Jamir Watkins did it against Virginia Tech in the 2024 ACC Tournament as he scored 34 in the Seminoles’ 86-76 win over the Hokies. Watkins’ 34 points are the most scored by a Seminole in the ACC Tournament.

Xaver Rathan-Mayes did it against Miami in February of 2015. His game against the Hurricanes ranks as one of the all-time scoring performances in program history as he scored 30 points in the final 4:38 of the Seminoles’ game in Coral Gables.  Rathan-Mayes scored 35 points, including a jaw-dropping 30 late in the game, as Florida State nearly clawed back from an 18-point deficit before falling, 81-77, at Miami.

It has been accomplished by All-Americans such as Bob Sura, Toney Douglas, and Tim Pickett. Al Thornton did it twice, including scoring a school record 45 points against Miami during the 2007 season.

Seminole head coach Luke Loucks was on the court as he helped his teammate Deividas Dulkys score 32 on eight 3-point shots made against No. 3 North Carolina in 2015. Loucks totaled six assists and four steals in the 90-57 win over the Tar Heel as ESPN’s College Game Day broadcast was broadcast from the Donald L. Tucker Center.

And it is what senior Chauncey Wiggins did in scoring 31 points on Saturday at the Tucker Center in Florida State’s 91-78 victory over SMU. The Seminoles’ victory propelled them to finish with a 10-8 record and a first-round bye in the ACC Tournament, which begins Tuesday and runs through Saturday at the Spectrum Center in the Queen City.

The second round ACC Tournament game between the Seminoles and the Golden Bears will be televised beginning at 7:00 p.m. on ESPNU with Hall of Famer Dave O’Brien and Virginia All-American Cory Alexander on the call.

Jeff Culhane and former Seminole Adrian Crawford will have the call live on the Seminole Sports Network and on Facebook Live on the Florida State Men’s Basketball Facebook page. Fans can also check out their Courtside Cam broadcast on the FSU MBB Facebook and X pages, the Seminoles’ YouTube channel, and on the Seminoles Unconquered app.

“When Chauncey Wiggins plays with the force and the determination he played with tonight, I would line us up against any team in the country and feel like we’ve got the chance to win the game,” said Loucks following Saturday’s victory over SMU. “Everyone is going to talk about the 31 points, which they should; they are going to talk about the six three’s, which they should. Both are impressive. But the nine rebounds and the three offensive rebounds are what I’m most impressed with. Those are the things that win you basketball games.”

Wiggins made his career-high six 3-point field goals in Florida State’s victory over SMU. He has now made a single-season career-high 67 3-point field goals this season and 152 3-point shots in his career. Wiggins is shooting a career-high .859 from the free-throw line and a career-high .623 from 2-point range.

The senior from Atlanta has scored a career-high 398 points entering the ACC Tournament and is averaging a career-high 13.3 points scored per game. It’s the first time he has averaged in double figures in four seasons in the ACC. Wiggins played his first three seasons at Clemson.

“All of my numbers say it in every category,” said Wiggins. “I’m trying to do more as a senior. Today was pretty good for me, and I just want to keep that rolling.”

In Florida State’s first game against the Golden Bears in January, Wiggins scored 18 points and pulled down five rebounds as the Seminoles won, 63-61, in Tallahassee.

Wiggins has played especially well in his last four games heading into Wednesday’s game against Cal.

In his last four games, he is averaging 18.8 points scored per game, has scored in double-figures in each of the last four games (14 against Miami, 12 at Georgia Tech, 18 at Pittsburgh, and 31 against SMU), is shooting .625 from the field (25 of 40), is .542 from the 3-point line (13 of 24), and .857 from the free throw line (12 of 14). In addition to his six 3-point field goals, he made six of eight free throws in scoring 31 points against SMU.

Following his career-high scoring performance against SMU, Wiggins reflected on his decision to come to Florida State and play for Loucks and his staff.

“When you are looking for schools, you are looking for coaches who are going to tell you the truth,” said Wiggins. “Coach Loucks was the one who told me the truth, and I’m glad I came here. I’m glad I scored my career-high, and I’m glad we won today.”

He continued to speak highly of the Seminoles’ senior class – His classmates Lajae Jones, Kobe MaGee, Robert McCray V, Shah Muhammad, Alex Steen — who were all honored in a pregame ceremony prior to Saturday’s game. It was noted during the post game press conference that Florida State’s senior class scored 82 of the Seminoles’ 91 points in Saturday’s victory.

“I’m very glad that we are going up and we are going to continue to go up,” said Wiggins. “It’s buying in on the court on the defensive end because once we get stops, we are fast, we love running, and we are all connected.”

According to Wiggins, it’s not just the Seminoles’ senior class who are connected.

“Right now, we are at an all-time high with the vibes,” said Wiggins. “We love each other at the end of the day. I feel like with this group, we jelled instantly, and that comes from off-court stuff. Going to eat, going to my guys’ house to eat, and getting to know my teammates on a personal level, I feel like that carries on to the court. We have shown that lately.”

For the Seminoles, the postseason begins Wednesday against Cal.

And with Cal waiting on Wednesday, Wiggins’ 31-point surge becomes the Seminoles’ newest entry in a history that keeps adding chapters.
