Baseball Creates Heavy Traffic on Bases, Defeats Alabama State 13-4

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama baseball (11-3) took advantage of ample baserunners, cruising to a 13-4 win over Alabama State (6-6) at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex on Wednesday. The Crimson Tide stole nine bases in the victory, tying the single game program record. Alabama was hit by a pitch seven times to match the program game high while also drawing 15 walks, one free pass shy of tying the Tide’s most in a single game.

John Lemm finished 2-for-4, working three walks to go with a double, a stolen base and three runs scored. Justin Lebron closed 2-for-5, adding a solo home run, two walks, two steals and two runs scored to his ledger. Brady Neal also provided multiple hits in a 2-for-4 effort, collecting two doubles, two RBI, one stolen base and a run scored. Bryce Fowler was 0-for-1 but walked three times while scoring a run, with Jason Torres earning four free passes and two RBI. Brennan Holt stole three bases as part of a 1-for-3 night, adding two RBI, one walk and a run scored. Justin Osterhouse tallied one hit in four at-bats, driving in a run with a single in a five-run 4th.

Alabama deployed a variety of arms on Wednesday, including Joe Chiarodo, who made his first collegiate start against the Hornets. The freshman didn’t allow a run over his 2.0 innings, scattering two hits and a walk to open the game. Luke Smyers followed Chiarodo with 2.0 scoreless innings of his own, picking up a strikeout while surrendering just one hit and a walk. Connor Lehman gave up a three-run home run in his second inning on the mound, as the sophomore was responsible for three runs, three hits and a walk over 1.2 innings. Anthony Pesci saw extended action in the later innings, tossing 2.1 scoreless frames to go with two strikeouts. Tate Robertson was on the mound for the final inning, seeing an unearned run cross the plate as the result of one hit and one walk, though he did manage a strikeout across his five batters faced.

We had a good approach against (Jaxon) Baptist, I don’t think he got through the first. They put us on for free 22 times, I mean that’s hard to do. I think what got us in trouble last time playing these guys in a 2-1 game was leaving the zone, breaking down our swings. If they’re going to put us on for free 22 times then there should probably be more than 13 (runs) up there, but we lacked that bases-clearing double you could say. At the end of the day though, when it’s ball, ball, ball, ball, you almost get surprised when you do get that strike. A win’s a win, winning on the road is hard against anybody. We were in a dogfight with these guys two weeks ago and we got after them tonight, so there’s plenty of things this group has to continue doing to grow. We’re so far away from a finished product, but proud of the win and on to North Florida this weekend.

How It Happened

  • T1 | Bryce Fowler opened the inning with a walk, later stealing second and reaching third after the throw to second trickled into the outfield. Justin Lebron worked a walk of his own and also stole second. With Brady Neal up with two men in scoring position, Neal lined a two-run double the other way into the left-center gap to score both Fowler and Lebron. (2-0, Alabama)
  • T3 | John Lemm drew a one-out walk and was followed by Jason Torres, who also earned the free pass. A fielder’s choice pushed both men into scoring position while Peyton Steele created the third walk of the inning to load the bases. Following Steele, Brennan Holt was hit by a pitch, forcing in a run. (3-0, Alabama)
  • T4 | The Tide batted around in the 4th, first started by Lebron, who launched a solo home run to left to leadoff the frame. After the homer, Neal doubled to right-center while Luke Vaughn was then hit by a pitch. John Lemm followed Vaughn with a bloop single to center, loading the bases. A balk allowed Neal to score, with Jason Torres’ RBI groundout paving the way for Vaughn to cross the plate. After Torres, Justin Osterhouse chopped a single up the middle to plate Lemm, with Brennan Holt’s RBI single through the right side allowing Osterhouse to score. (8-0, Alabama)
  • T5 | Vaughn managed a one-out walk before Lemm rifled a double down the right field line, scoring Vaughn from first. (9-0, Alabama)
  • B6 | The Hornets found the scoreboard after a double and a walk led to a three-run home run. (9-3, Alabama)
  • T7 | Vaughn singled hard to left field to open the inning, later reaching third following a one-out single by Torres. With pinch-hitter Eric Hines at the plate, a wild pitch reached the backstop to plate Vaughn. (10-3, Alabama)
  • T8 | Holt worked a walk as the leadoff man, eventually stealing second. Will Plattner, who entered as a pinch-hitter earlier in the game, was plunked, reaching first. Both men succeeded in a double-steal, placing two in scoring position. After Vaughn was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Lemm and Torres both drew consecutive bases-loaded walks, leading to two runs. (12-3, Alabama)
  • T9 | Andrew Purdy went to the plate as a pinch-hitter with one out and was hit by a pitch. Lebron worked a two-out walk, with both men advancing a base on a wild pitch. Plattner was also plunked, loading the bases, while pinch-hitter Caleb Barnett was beaned, forcing in a run. (13-3, Alabama)
  • B9 | The Hornets led off the inning with a walk before an error placed two on with nobody out. After a strikeout, an RBI single saw a run cross the plate in the final inning. (13-4, Alabama)
