Softball Heads West To Judi Garman Classic

FULLERTON, Calif. – In the final weekend before opening up Southeastern Conference play, the No. 4/6 Florida softball team heads to the West Coast for five games at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, California.

The Gators will face Cal, East Texas A&M, No. 8/9 UCLA, LMU and Oregon State from Feb. 26-28 at the Anderson Family Field on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.

Florida (19-0) is looking to continue its best start since 2016 and pick up its first ranked win of the season.

Notables

  • The last time the Gators played UCLA was on March 1, 2024, when then-freshman Keagan Rothrock threw a complete-game shutout against the Bruins, allowing just four baserunners off two hits and two walks with five strikeouts

    • Skylar Wallace hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, which proved to be the game winner

  • Ava Brown’s first career win was against Oregon State in 2024, when her and Rothrock combined for a one-hitter in a 3-1 Florida victory in Tampa 
  • This weekend will be a homecoming for Taylor Shumaker who is from Fullerton and played at Esperanza High School
  • Florida has faced three of its five weekend opponents in the Women’s College World Series: UCLA (2008, 2010, 2018 & 2022), Oregon State (2022) and Cal (2011)

    • The Gators went 2-0 against LMU during the Stanford Regional in 2023 in Palo Alto, Calif.

  • The Gators lead the nation in doubles (44), hits (193) and walks (103)

    • Florida ranks in the top-5 in the NCAA in home runs (40), runs batted in (171), on-base percentage (.498), pitching shutouts (8), slugging percentage (.720) and runs (177)

  • Shumaker leads the nation in runs scored (27) and is just one run shy of scoring the 100th run of her career
  • Brown leads in the NCAA in walks (24) at the plate and ranks second in the NCAA in saves (3) in the circle  
  • Kenleigh Cahalan ranks scored in the NCAA in RBIs (32) – behind just Jordan Woolery of UCLA (36)
  • Rothrock leads the nation in victories (8) and ranks third in strikeouts (67)
  • Gabi Comia is one of just 41 players in the NCAA without a strikeout this season
  • Jocelyn Erickson has 168 career RBIs as a Gator and needs just eight RBIs to move into a tie with Aja Paculba (2008-11) for tenth-most RBIs in program history (176)
