No. 12 Florida Outlasts No. 7 Clemson 14-13 in Neutral Site Thriller

MILTON, Ga. – The No. 12/10 Florida Gators Lacrosse team (2-1) took down No. 7/8 Clemson (3-2, 0-1 ACC) 14-13 at Milton High School in Milton, Ga., on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Gators were led Clark Hamilton with six points (four goals and two assists) and Frannie Hahn with four points (three goals and one assist) on offense. On defense Florida was led by Ashley Dyer with a ground ball and caused turnover and Sam Hughes who registered a ground ball and held Clemson’s leading scorer Alexa Spallina to a goal and an assist. Paige Crowther made nine saves on 16 shots faced (.500 save percentage).
 
Clemson was led Natalie Shurtleff who had eight points (seven goals and an assist) as three other players ended with two points.
 
How It Happened
First Quarter (Gators 5, Tigers 5)

  • The Gators got out to a quick start, scoring the first four goals of the game for a 4-0 lead. Frannie Hahn scored two as Clark Hamilton and Boo DeWitt each added one during the 4-0 run.
  • Natalie Shurtleff would respond twice for the Tigers before Clark Hamilton scored her second of the game to give the Gators a 5-2 lead.
  • Clemson would add three goals in the final 4:14 to tie it 5-5 going into the second quarter.

 
Second Quarter (Gators 10, Tigers 8)

  • Gabby Greene would score twice for the Orange and Blue at the beginning of the second quarter to make it 7-5 Gators.
  • Clemson would add three unanswered to their tally to take their first and only lead of the day at 8-7.
  • The Gators would respond in the final 2:09 of the first half with two goals from Gabbi Koury and one from Frannie Hahn. Koury’s second goal and Hahn’s goal each came in the final 30 second of the first half, Koury’s with 23 seconds left and Hahn’s with three seconds left.

 
Third Quarter (Gators 13, Tigers 9)

  • Florida would carry the momentum from the end of the first half into the second, scoring the first three goals of the second half from Kaitlyn Davies, Boo DeWitt and Clark Hamilton.
  • The Gators defense stood stout in the third quarter only allowing two shots on goals and one goal from Clemson with 39 second left to go into the final frame with a 13-9 lead.

 
Fourth Quarter (Gators 14, Tigers 13)

  • After Clemson cut the lead to 13-10, Clark Hamilton extended the Gators lead to 14-10 with her fourth goal of the day.
  • The Tigers would claw back into this game with goals at 10:51, 7:49, and 1:28 to make it 14-13.
  • A non-releasable yellow card from Alexa Stone with 1:32 left and a green card from Kaitlyn Davies primed Clemson to draw the game even, but a caused turnover from goalie Paige Crowther with 19 seconds left helped seal the game for the Gators.

 
Key Notes

  • Clark Hamilton has continued her hot start on the season adding three goals and an assist against Clemson. She now has 20 points (14 goals and 6 assists) on the season, averaging 6.67 points per game, more than double her 3.04 points per game she finished with last season.
  • The Gators finished with more draw controls with the Tigers at 15-14. This is the first time that this season the Florida finished with more draw controls than the opponent.
  • Florida went 16-for-16 on clears against Clemson, staying perfect on the season as they are now 49-for-49 on the season.
  • In all three games this season, the Gators have held their opponents five goals or under in the second half. Against Clemson, Florida held the Tigers to five goals in the second half, one in the third and four in the fourth
