Shelton Defeats Fritz to Claim Fourth Title at the ATP 500 Nexo Dallas Open

DALLAS, Texas – Ben Shelton earns his fourth tournament title at the ATP 500 Nexo Dallas Open, with a win over No. 7 Taylor Fritz in a one versus two seed final.
The former Gator entered the tournament as the two seed, and had to face opponents ranked in the ATP top 100 through all rounds of competition. Shelton faced No. 38 Gabriel Diallo, No. 52 Adrian Mannarino, No. 68 Miomir Kecmanovic and No. 40 Denis Shapovalov who was the reigning champion of the Dallas Open prior to his match against Fritz in the finals.  

Shelton started down a set at 3-6 in the finals, but forced a third set winning 6-3 in the second. Shelton had an early break in the third, to go up 3-1, but Fritz broke back to make the set even at 3-3. The match continued, with Fritz going up 5-4 and had a chance to take the match being up 40-15 to break Shelton’s serve. Shelton was able to hold off Fritz for three championship points and break serve to win 7-5.  

This win over Fritz ticks off another first for Shelton’s pro career. This championship not only marks his fourth tournament title, but also his first indoor-hard surface title. Shelton is now 2-1 over Fritz all time, with his two wins being for tournament titles at the ATP Masters 1000 Canada and now at the ATP 500 Nexo Dallas Open.
