Seminoles Use Second-Half Surge to Defeat Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. –  Sophomore Martin Somerville scored 23 points to lead Florida State to a 92-69 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday at Cassell Coliseum. The win marked the Seminoles’ first in Blacksburg since February 2020 and their third ACC road victory of the season. With steals from AJ Swinton and Somerville, Florida State reached 201 steals this season, becoming the third ACC team to surpass the 200 mark. The Seminoles also moved to 95 total blocks, led by Lajae Jones with three, tying his season high. Alex Steen added two blocks, matching his season best.

Florida State improved to 12-13 overall and 5-7 in the ACC, while Virginia Tech fell to 17-9 and 6-7.

Virginia Tech led 17-11 with 13:54 remaining in the first half before Florida State trimmed the deficit to 26-22 with 7:57 left. Chauncey Wiggins converted a dunk off a forced turnover to keep the Seminoles within striking distance. Jones added two driving layups and grabbed four rebounds in the first half.

Swinton hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 34, but the Hokies answered with a 3 of their own to regain a three-point lead with 3:24 remaining. 

Wiggins connected from beyond the arc with 32 seconds left to halt a 5-0 Virginia Tech run, sending Florida State into halftime trailing 42-39.

Florida State opened the second half with a free throw from Robert McCray V and a driving layup by Jones to tie the game. The Seminoles then went on a 6-0 run, sparked by a Jones dunk, McCray free throws, and a Wiggins pull-up jumper, to take their first lead at 50-49.

The Seminoles extended their momentum with a 15-2 run to build an eight-point lead with 12:12 remaining. Somerville scored five consecutive points during the stretch. 

Florida State continued to pull away, holding Virginia Tech to three points during a 15-3 run that pushed the lead to 78-60 with less than five minutes to play.

Florida State’s lead grew to 26 points with 2:37 remaining, its largest margin against an ACC opponent this season.

The Seminoles took the lead early in the second half and never relinquished it, closing out a 92-69 victory.

Four Seminoles scored in double figures. Somerville’s 23 points tied his season high, Wiggins added 19, while Jones and McCray each finished with 17. McCray recorded his 12th game in double digits this season, and Jones extended his streak to four consecutive games scoring in double figures.

The Seminoles return home to the Tucker Center to take on Boston College on Tuesday, February 17th at 6:00 PM.
