Jones And McCeray V Lead Seminoles in Close, 61-58, Loss To No. 15 Virginia
The Cavaliers took their first lead of the second half with just over a minute to play on a dunk by Jacari White to give the Cavaliers a 59-58 lead. McCray V had a last-second 3-point shot that was just long as time expired.
The Seminoles fell to 11-13 overall and 4-7 in the ACC. Virginia improved to 21-3 overall and 10-2 in ACC play.
Jones scored 20 or more points for the fourth time this season and has finished in double-figure scoring in three straight games. In addition to his 21 points, he grabbed his career-high of 13 rebounds. He surpassed his previous high of 12 rebounds late in the second half.
McCray V extended his double-digit scoring streak to 11 games, and he has now scored at least 20 points in five games during his first season as a Seminole.
The Cavaliers took their first lead of the second half with 1:12 left to play in a dunk Jacari White.
In addition to his 20 points, McCray V added four rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a season-high three blocks. He’s led the team in assists 21 times this season.
Virginia held a 12-8 lead with 14:43 to play in the first half. The Seminoles would outscore the Cavaliers 10-3 over the next four minutes, and Jones would convert on an and-one to take an 18-15 lead with 10:46 remaining in the half.
Jones led the Seminoles in the first half, scoring 14 first-half points. Jones’ 14 points were the most he has scored in a half this season.
Florida State entered the half tied with Virginia 32-32.
The Seminoles would come out of the half with energy as they took a seven-point, 41-34, lead with 17:06 to play in the game.
The Cavaliers would tie the game at 45 apiece at the 12:12 mark of the second half. Florida State responded by going on a 9-0 run, capped by a McCray V and-one to take a 54-45 lead. The Seminoles’ nine-point lead would be their largest of the game.
Senior Kobe MaGee scored six of the nine points during that scoring run. MaGee finished the game with nine points and four rebounds.
Virginia’s White finished with 19 points, four rebounds, and two assists. White led the Cavaliers in scoring for the second time this season.
The Seminoles travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, to take on Virginia Tech on Saturday, February 14, at 2:00 p.m.
