McGill Puts Herself in the Running for Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award

SPRINGFIELD, Mass — The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced today that Florida’s Liv McGill is one of 10 candidates currently in the running for the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Award.
 
Through games of Sunday, Feb. 1, McGill ranks ninth in the nation in scoring (22.5 ppg), 16th in assists (5.9 apg) and tied for 31st in steals (2.82 spg). The Minneapolis, Minn. native is one of only two players in the country averaging more than 20 points, five rebounds and five assists on the year.
 
McGill’s sophomore season got off to an impressive start as over her first two games she scored 64 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, handed out 19 assists and picked up 12 steals. Per OptaStats, “the only other NBA, WNBA or Division I men’s or women’s player this century to have 60/15/15/10 in those categories over a 2-game span was Dwayne Wade from February 28-March 2, 2009.”
 
One of those games was a 38-point, eight-rebound, 10 assist, seven-steal effort against Chattanooga, which marked the only game in Division I Women’s Basketball since 1999-2000 in which a player had reached all of those statistical marks. She also became just the sixth player since 1999-2000 to score at least 38 points, and dish out at least 10 assists in a game. Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Plum are among the other players to have accomplished the feat.
 
The preseason All-SEC Second Team honoree was named the USBWA National Player of the Week, and the SEC Player of the Week for her efforts during the first week of the season, and would later be named the most outstanding player of the Grand Cayman Classic after averaging 27.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 4,0 assists, 2.00 steals and 1.00 blocked shots over the Gators’ two wins.
 
McGill has scored in double figures in each of her 22 games played this season, 20 or more points 13 times, and 30 or more points on four occasions. She also has three games of 10 or more assists, including a career-high tying 11 at Kentucky on Jan. 15, 2026. McGill recently. Became just the 28th player in program history to score 1,000 points in her career, and just the second sophomore to reach that mark.
 
The Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year Watch List will be narrowed down to a group of five finalists in late February, and presented to the selection committee, where a winner will be selected.

The Selection Committee for the Nancy Lieberman Award is composed of top women’s college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers. The winner of the Lieberman Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date.
 
Previous winners of the Nancy Lieberman Award include Caitlin Clark, Iowa (2022-24), Paige Bueckers, UConn (2021 and ’25), Sabrina Ionescu, Oregon (2018-20), Skylar Diggins, Notre Dame (2012-13), Diana Taurasi, Connecticut (2003-04), and Sue Bird, Connecticut (2000-02).
