No. 5/8 Florida Swim & Dive Earns Road Sweep at No. 15/13 Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 5/8 Florida swimming & diving programs swept No. 15/13 Auburn on Friday at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center, closing SEC dual competition with 3-0 records to head into next month’s SEC Championships undefeated.

#8 UF Women: 179, #13 Auburn Women: 119

 

The Gators recorded sweeps in all relay, backstroke and breaststroke events, along with the 500y free, 1,000y free, 200y IM and one-meter diving. Overall, Florida totaled 26 first-place finishes, with eight men and seven women contributing at least one victory. On the men’s side, Josh Liendo, Aleksas Savickas and Ahmed Jaouadi  each led the team with 18 points, while Lainy Kruger paced the women with 22 individual points.
 
Swimming
The Gators opened and closed the dual with relay victories. Florida’s Catie Choate, Anita Bottazzo, Beatriz Bezerra and Addison Reese kicked things off with first in the 200y medley relay (1:35.84). On the men’s side, Jonny Marshall, Aleksas Savickas, Josh Liendo and Alexander Painter followed with a win after combining for a 1:22.90. Florida capped the afternoon with a pair of 400y free relay victories, as Kruger, Choate, Reese and Sylvia Statkevicius posted a first-place time of 3:16.62, while Devin Dilger, Painter, Scotty Buff and Liendo sealed the meet for the men with an 2:49.77.
 
Florida dominated the distance freestyle events, sweeping the top spots in both races. Julie Brousseau and Ahmed led the way with wins in the 500y free (4:40.20 & 4:15.20) and the 1,000y free (9:30.03 & 8:39.33). Camille DeBoer and Luke Corey followed with second-place finishes in the 1,000y free (9:46.66 & 8:55.91) and third-place finishes in the 500 free (4:48.25 & 4:24.09). Eric Brown added to the men’s scoring after earning second in the 500 free (4:21.41) and third in the 1,000 free (9:05.13).
 
In sprint freestyle action, Kruger won the women’s 100y free (49.08) and 200y free (1:45.45), while placing second in the 50y free (22.86). Liendo claimed first in the men’s 50y free with a time of 19.28 and Dilger and Painter went two-three in the 100y free, clocking 43.05 and 43.18 times, respectively. Statkevicius and Aiden Norman added second-place finishes in the 200 free, recording times of 1:46.53 and 1:34.52, respectively.
 
Choate swept the women’s backstroke events, winning the 100y back in 50.95 and the 200y back in 1:50.66. Marshall secured first in the men’s 100y back with a time of 45.69, while Florida claimed the top three spots in both 200y back races. Zuri Ferguson’s 1:56.10 and JoJo Ramey’s 1:56.59 followed Choate in the women’s 200y back. On the men’s side, Norman led the sweep with a winning time of 1:41.76, followed by Marshall (1:42.89) and Caleb Maldari (1:44.13).
 
The women swept the top three positions in the breaststroke events. Bottazzo won the 100 breast in 58.13, while Grace Rainey took first in the 200y breast (2:09.46). Molly Mayne finished second in the 100y breast (1:00.21) and third in the 200y breast (2:11.58), while Anna Moore placed second in the 200y breast (2:10.74) and third in the 100y breast (1:00.87). Savickas completed a sweep on the men’s side, winning the 100y breast (52.55) and the 200y breast (1:54.69). Koen de Groot tied for second in the 100y breast (52.70) and Nil Cadevall finished third in the 200y breast (1:56.40).
 
Florida earned five top-three finishes in the butterfly events, led by Liendo’s victory in the men’s 100y fly (44.31) and Rainey’s win in the women’s 200y fly (1:58.93). Bezerra placed second in the women’s 100y fly (52.73), while Buff finished second in the men’s event (45.99). Matthew Cairns added a third-place finish in the men’s 200y fly after touching the wall in 1:45.50.
 
In the final individual event of the meet, Grace Rabb and Cadevall closed strong for the Gators, each claiming first place in the 200y IM with times of 1:57.71 and 1:45.32, respectively.
 
Diving
Gator diving claimed three of the four top spots on the day, highlighted by wins in both men’s events. Camyla Monroy captured first place in the women’s one-meter with a score of 294.60, while Conor Gesing led a one-two finish for the men on one-meter with a first-place score of 358.65, followed by Jesus Gonzalez in second (346.88). On three-meter, Jesus Agundez secured the men’s top spot with a winning score of 410.33 and Alexa Fung contributed a second-place finish for the women after posted a 314.55.

The Gators return to action following a bye week to face in-state rival No. 12/NR Florida State on Friday, Jan. 30. The swimming portion of the meet will take place at the Florida Aquatics Swimming Training Center in Ocala, Fla., with events beginning at 12 p.m. ET. Diving will begin at 11 a.m. at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center Natatorium, where seniors Casey Greenberg and Elisha Dees will be honored prior to the first dive.
