Bonner’s Career High Pulls Noles Past Panthers, 69-65

PITTSBURGH – The Florida State women’s basketball team (6-12, 1-5 ACC) defeated Pitt (8-11, 1-5 ACC) by a final score of 69-65 on Thursday at the Petersen Events Center.
 
Senior guard Sydney Bowles led the Noles with 24 points, tying her career high of six three-pointers.  Senior guard Amaya Bonner had a career night, registering 22 points, a new career best, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor, which also tied her career high for field goals made. She also had two steals and five rebounds.

Sophomore guard Tatum Greene had back-to-back games with four steals, trying her career high.   

Pania Davis led the Noles on the glass, contributing 10 rebounds.

 

The Seminoles opened the first quarter strong, knocking down four three-pointers, including three from Bowles and pieced together a 14-2 run. But the Panthers closed the quarter with a 10-0 run to tie, 16-16. 

The Noles tipped off the second quarter with a six-point run, led by Allie Kubek’s triple. Florida State closed the first half with a 12-point run to take a 34–28 lead at the break. Bowles headed into the locker room with 15 first-half points, followed by Bonner with nine.

 

Two free throws made by Greene kick-started the Noles six-point run in the third quarter. Defensively, the Noles held Pitt to only two points within the first five minutes of the second half. Bowles went for a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line and knocked down a three-pointer with two seconds left in the quarter, helping the Noles establish an 11 point lead at the end of the third.

 

Pitt fought back with an eight-point run to start the final quarter.  Florida State held a one-point lead, 62-61 with 2:23 remaining.  Bonner took over, driving to the basket on the next possession. She would score the final seven points for FSU of the game as the Noles took home the victory 69-65. 

 

The Seminoles will face  RV/23 North Carolina on Sunday, Jan. 18. The game will air on the CW at 2 p.m.
