No. 22 Seminoles Sweep Home Opener Doubleheader

TALLAHASEE – The No. 22 Florida State men’s tennis team (2-0) started the dual match season strong Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of Troy and Mercer. The Seminoles defeated the Trojans (0-1) at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center, before earning a 7-0 victory over the Bears (0-1) in the nightcap.
 
FSU VS. TROY
The Seminoles claimed an early lead over Troy after a pair of doubles wins. No. 43 Luis Felipe Miguel and Erik Schiessl paired together in doubles and were first off the court with a 6-1 win over Steph Tavares Noale and Ausias Martin Melo. The No. 82 doubles pair of Azariah Rusher and Mohommad Alkotop teamed up to collect their first victory together this season with a 6-3 win over Yeray Andres Pastor and Henrique de Brito on court three. Justin Lyons and Jan Sebesta battled on court two before losing their match to Thiago Drozdowski and Luciano Alcocer, 3-6.
 
In singles play, Florida State continued the momentum as No. 69 Felipe Miguel claimed his first spring singles win as a Seminole, besting Luciano Alcocer 6-3, 6-0 on court one. Newcomer Alkotop earned his second victory of the day after defeating Louis Boilevin 6-3, 6-1. The match clincher came on court six with another rookie, Oren Ezerzer, taking down Drozdowski 6-3, 6-2.
 
FSU VS. MERCER
Florida State struck first in doubles play as Lyons and Sebesta took down Howell Burns and Esteban Gasser with a 6-3 win on court two. The Seminoles took the decision on court three with Rusher and Alkotop to clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 victory against Alex Aldaz and Prince Gandonou.
 
Alkotop would pick up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gandonou to begin singles play. Rusher earned his second singles win of the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win against Aldaz to give FSU a 3-0 lead. Miguel downed Isak Padio 6-2, 7-6 (7) on court one, before Sebesta held off Gasser 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 on court six. Florida State answered again, this time on court five, with Lyons taking the victory over Shingo Masuda in a three-set battle. Corey Craig ended the nightcap with a three-set victory against Nemanja Stefanovic 6-4, 2-6, 6-6.
 
Florida State will continue its homestand against College of Charleston on Thursday, with the first match set for 4 p.m. at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Courts. Live stats and streaming will be available on Seminoles.com
