No. 13/16 Alabama Sweeps Georgia Tech in Dominant Showing
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama swimming and diving team kicked off the new year with a sweep over Georgia Tech on Saturday.
The No. 13 Alabama men’s team defeated Georgia Tech 205-93, while the 16th-ranked Crimson Tide women’s team won 233-66 over the Yellow Jackets.
Emily Jones highlighted the day’s events, as she toppled three Alabama Aquatic Center records in the 100 backstroke, 400 medley relay and 200 free relay.
Highlights
- Shattering an 18-year-old pool record, Jones captured a 51.29 as the leadoff 400 medley relay swimmer to topple the former 51.57 100 back mark set by Florida’s Gemma Spofforth in 2008
- The women’s 400 medley relay also surpassed the 3:32.85 standard set by Texas in 2023 as Jones, Jada Scott, Gaby Van Brunt and Cadence Vincent combined for a 3:29.67 facility record
- The men’s 400 medley relay team followed suit, topping the facility record as Tommy Hagar, Noah Saylor, Sean Niewold and Zarek Wilson went 3:07.28 to break the previous record time of 3:08.57 from Florida in 2008
- Mackenzie Brandt bettered her 1000 free performance with a 9:41.85 to further secure her No. 3 spot on UA’s all-time top 10 list in the event
- Gaby Van Brunt recorded a career-best 1:56.36 in the 200 fly, moving to fifth all-time in program history
- In his first collegiate competition, Sean Niewold posted a 19.19 as the leadoff swimmer in the 200 free relay to rank fifth all-time in program history in the 50 free
- The Tide concluded the night with its women’s 200 freestyle relay team bettering its pool record from a year prior as Charlotte Rosendale, Jones, Tessa Giele and Vincent recorded a 1:27.53
“What a great way to kick off the new year. The team performed great today, and I’m proud of their hard work and effort over the break to come back stronger. We had a number of swimmers capture season-best and career-best performances today, and we even shattered a few facility records. We need to keep this focus as we build toward SECs in February, and can’t wait to see us continue to grow with our next two conference dual meets.
“I also want to send a big shoutout to the crowd today! It was amazing to have so many fans and alumni in attendance. They brought the energy and really made it a special occasion for our seniors on Senior Day. I look forward to seeing everyone back out at the end of the month when we host Auburn.”
