McCray V, Seminoles Travel To Play At Dayton On Tuesday At 7:00 p.m.

Last Updated: December 15, 2025By

DAYTON, Ohio – Florida State’s Robert McCray V doesn’t pay attention to statistics, national rankings, or where he’s positioned among the top players in the nation and in the ACC.

He had no idea he was approaching the Florida State program record for assists in a game in his first game as a Seminole.

He also had no idea he was two rebounds away from just the fifth triple-double in school history against UMass in the Orange Bowl Classic this past Saturday.

It’s just the way the unassuming McCray plays the game of basketball.

It’s how he will approach Tuesday night’s game against Dayton at the University of Dayton Arena not knowing that his next double-figure assists game will put him into the Seminoles’ record book. Again.

McCray and his Seminole teammates face Dayton of the Atlantic 10 Conference on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on the CBS Sports Network with Tom McCarthy and Chris Walker set to call the action.

The game can also be heard on the Seminole Sports Network with Jeff Culhane and Adrian Crawford calling the action courtside inside one of the toughest arenas in the nation for opponents to play.

“During a game, I don’t realize what my statistics are,” said McCray V. “Unless one of the coaches tell me, my totals aren’t anything I pay attention to. I don’t play the game for numbers or accolades.”

McCray V, who totaled 11 assists against UMass on Saturday in the Orange Bowl Classic, enters Tuesday’s game against Dayton tied for fifth in the nation with 72 assists and sixth in the nation in assists per game with a career-high 7.2 assists per game average. He is one of only seven players in the nation with a 7.0 assists per game (or more) average.

He also enters the Seminoles’ game against Dayton as the ACC leader in assists per game average and is looking to become the first Seminole to lead the ACC in assists in a single season. McCray’s career-high and program-record 17 assists in Florida State’s victory over Alcorn State on November 4, 2025 are the most assists in a game by any player in the nation this season.

While McCray doesn’t pay attention to his ever-climbing statistical totals, his head coach certainly does.

“Robert has been one of the best point guards in the country in terms of facilitating this year,” said Loucks.  “He’s known as a scoring guard but he can really pass the ball. He’s doing a good job facilitating for us.”

McCray V has earned double figure assists in three of Florida State’s first 10 games of the season with a 17 assists coming against Alcorn State and 11 each against Texas A&M (November 28) and UMass (December 13).

McCray V is just the third Florida State player (four total times) who has recorded double figure assists in three games during the same season. McCray V will play the remainder of the 2025-26 season looking to become the first Seminole in school history to record double figure assists in four different games in not only the same season but in his career.

Loucks knew he had a special player on his team when he signed McCray V during the spring of 2025 with visions of him becoming one of the cornerstones of his first team at Florida State.

Following McCray’s opening night performance in a Seminole uniform against Alcorn State, Loucks began his first post-game press conference singing the praises of the newest member of the Florida State record book.

“For our opening night, for our senior, the way he broke down the game, and more impressively with only two turnovers … it’s hard to share the ball the way he did and not turn the ball over. What a special night for him,” said Loucks.

While Loucks ran down a complete box score of great efforts that night, his thoughts quickly drifted back to McCray V.

“There are so many guys to mention, but the focus should be on Rob McCray and the way he managed that game,” said Loucks. “That was truly special to watch.”

Loucks, who named McCray his starting point guard during the summer, has always known his star senior as a point guard while his scoring prowess illustrated an additional skill.

McCray V is the Seminoles’ leading scorer with a 14.8 points per game scoring average. It marks the third consecutive season he has averaged more than 14.0 points per game. He averaged a career-high 18.4 points per game as a sophomore and 16.2 points per game as a junior (both at Jacksonville University). He averages 14.5 points per game for his 87 game career.

“Some people don’t even consider him to be a point guard,” said Loucks.  “A lot of people thought he was more of a shooting guard coming out of Jacksonville (where he played the last two seasons).”

While McCray V is Florida State’s starting point guard and top distributor of the basketball, he wants to be recognized as having an all-around game.

“I feel like being one of the nation’s leaders in assists allows me to show the country that I can be a good point guard,” said McCray V. “I feel like I am a good point guard and that I can be good at many other things on the court. What I want to be the most is a leader for my teammates.”
