Risch Leads Noles with 18 Points vs. Charleston
TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State women’s basketball team (4-8) fell to the College of Charleston (7-2) by a final score of 75-70 on Sunday evening at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.
Four Seminoles scored in double figures, with junior guard Emma Risch in the lead with a season-best 18 points. Treadwell managed a season-high 13 points, while senior guard Jasmine Shavers recorded 12 and junior guard Sole Williams added 10.
Treadwell impressed down low, spearheading the rebounding effort with a career-high nine boards while also adding a block. Risch maintained a steady presence from beyond the arc, sinking a season-high five three-pointers. She also set a new career high in rebounds with seven against the Cougars after setting a new best just a game ago against Notre Dame with six.
Senior guard Amaya Bonner recorded a season-best nine points, going 4-of-8 from the field and managed a season-best four assists. She also provided defensive pressure with two blocks and one steal to go with two rebounds.
Junior center Pania Davis tied her career high in blocks with three, her third time doing so this season. She would also contribute seven points, four rebounds and one steal.
Florida State struck first thanks to a quick mid-range jumper from Shavers followed by a triple from Risch, creating an early lead in the first quarter. Treadwell established herself under the basket, converting her two offensive rebounds down low and adding a free throw for five points. Five different Seminoles put points on the board, but the Cougars followed closely, with a late basket to tie the contest at 15-15 heading into the second quarter.
The Seminoles reclaimed the lead early and Pania Davis and Bonner combined for five points each in the frame, but Charleston managed a 29-28 edge at halftime.
Davis was strong on both offensive and defensive fronts, contributing seven points as well as four rebounds, two blocks and a steal in the first half. Shavers led the rebounding effort with six boards while Kubek and Risch trailed close with five each.
Despite a slow start in the start of the third quarter, Williams added five quick points and Risch sank her second triple of the game just 34 seconds later, contributing to an 8-0 run and forcing Charleston into a timeout. Another 8-0 stretch capped by another three from Williams saw out the final three minutes of the quarter, resulting in a 47-47 tie going into the final 10 minutes of play.
Treadwell broke into double figures a minute into the fourth quarter with an early tip-in to tie. Though the Cougars fought back, the Seminoles excelled from distance as Risch hit three three-pointers while Shavers added one to battle back the lead. The final minutes however saw Charleston dominate the stripe, resulting in the narrow 75-70 final score.
Florida State will play its second conference game of the season against Virginia Tech on Thursday, Dec. 18 at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. The game will stream on the ACC Network Extra (ACCNX) at 6 p.m.
