McCray V scores 21 in Seminoles’ loss to UMass in Orange Bowl Classic
The Seminoles fell to 5-5, and the Minutemen improved to 8-3.
With 21 points and 11 assists, McCray V recorded his second double-double of the season. With 12 points and a season-high 10 rebounds, MaGee recorded his first double-double of the season.
McCray finished with eight rebounds – just two rebounds shy of his first career triple-double.
UMass began the game on an 8-0 run before a 3-point shot from Chauncey Wiggins and an Alier Maluk layup cut the lead to three with 17:36 remaining in the first half.
The Minutemen held a 13-point lead, 34-21, with 8:17 left to play before halftime.
A Cam Miles’ 3-point shot sparked a 14-2 run for the Seminoles, capped by a three-point play from McCray V, cutting the lead to one, 36-35.
Florida State earned its first lead of the game thanks to three made free throws from Somerville after he was fouled on a 3-point shot attempt. He made all three shots to put the Seminoles ahead by two, 38-36, with 3:20 left to play in the first half.
Somerville finished the game shooting 100% from the free throw line (6-6). Somerville’s six free throws made and attempts are his season high for both categories.
The Seminoles made seven of their last nine, and their final three field goals, including back-to-back 3-point shots from MaGee to close the half with a 47-43 advantage.
McCray V opened the scoring in the second half with a layup on the fast break.
UMass reclaimed the lead and led 61-58 before a Swinton slam dunk cut the lead down to one.
Swinton tied his season and career-high with 12 points and recorded three steals.
Florida State trailed by seven, 76-71, with 8:38 left in the game. The Seminoles went on a 6-0 run, which began with a layup from Thomas Bassong, and cut the lead to just three with 8:09 left to play.
Over the last two minutes of the game, Florida State made four 3-point field goals to cut the UMass lead to six with 13 seconds left in the game.
Florida State travels to Dayton to take on the Flyers at the University of Dayton Arena on Tuesday, December 16.
