No. 10 Softball Run Rules Syracuse to Secure Series Win

TALLAHASSEE — The No. 10 Florida State softball team (24-4, 2-0) secured a decisive 13-1 victory over Syracuse (11-9, 0-2) to secure the series win at JoAnne Graf Field on Saturday.

The Seminoles were propelled by two home runs and a dominant five-run second inning, while holding the Orange to just two hits over five innings.

Isa Torres opened the scoring for Florida State in the first inning with a solo home run to right field. Jaysoni Beachum walked and later scored on a groundout by Kennedy Harp, putting the Noles ahead 2-0 after one inning.

In the second inning, the Noles added five more runs to take full control. Shelby McKenzie walked and advanced to third on a single by Marin Heller and another by Makenna Sturgis. Hayley Griggs hit a sacrifice fly to score McKenzie. Beachum drew a bases-loaded walk, and Bella Ruggiero followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Sturgis. Harp then reached on a throwing error by Syracuse, allowing Torres and Beachum to score, making it 7-0 Florida State through two innings.

McKenzie hit her fourth home run of the season in the third inning to put the Noles ahead 8-0.

The fourth inning saw FSU add five more runs. Harp singled, and Angelee Bueno was hit by a pitch. McKenzie and Heller hit back-to-back doubles to make it 11-0. Griggs brought home Heller on a single, and Madi Frey drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 13-0.

Syracuse managed to score in the fifth inning when Kendall Gaunt hit a solo home run.

Ashtyn Danley delivered a strong performance, pitching four innings while allowing only one hit and striking out four batters. 

The Noles will close out the series against the Orange tomorrow at noon on ACCNX.

  • Isa Torres went 2-for-2 with a home run and a RBI today and is now 22-for-25 in her seven games since returning to injury. Torres has reached safely in her last 14 plate appearances and has 9 hits in her last 9 at bats. Torres is hitting .638 this season which leads the NCAA.
  • Marin Heller tied her season high with three hits in today’s game. 
  • 8 different players recorded a RBI today. 
  • FSU has allowed just three hits in its past two games. 
  • FSU improved to 31-4 all-time against Syracuse.
  • Saturday night marked FSU’s 9th run-rule victory of the year. 
  • Saturday tied for FSU’s largest win over Syracuse. FSU also beat the Orange 13-1 in 2021.
