Three Home Matches Lined Up for No. 22 Men’s Tennis This Weekend

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Men’s Tennis team is currently 7-8 on the season and 1-4 in the SEC. The Gators have a chance to boost their record with three home matches this upcoming weekend with No. 23 Ole Miss on Friday, March 13 and No. 7 Mississippi State and North Florida on Sunday, March 15.

The Gators will face the Rebels at 5 p.m. EST on Friday and in a double header on Sunday will have the Bulldogs at noon and the Ospreys at 5 p.m. EST.

Last Time Out

Florida faced fifth ranked TCU on Tuesday evening, where the Gators gave the Horned Frogs a battle on their home courts. Although Florida ultimately lost the match, the Gators made it a close one playing out every court to make the final score 4-3 in favor of top-ranked TCU.

The Gators earned a win on court three for doubles with Kevin Edengren and Andreas Timini who are now 7-3 at court three this season, holding the best doubles record for the Gators. On the singles courts, the Gators took wins on court three with Pablo Perez Ramos (2-0 on court three), court four with Jeremy Jin (1-2 on court four) and court six with Kevin Edengren (4-0 on court six).

Rebels Retrospective

Ole Miss is 14-3 on the season, with a 2-3 conference record. Their three losses come from within the SEC at the hands of Texas A&M, Oklahoma and LSU, which were all road matches for the Rebels. Ole Miss is ranked one lower than the Gators at No. 23 and hold a record of 22-46 against Florida. The team only holds one ranked doubles pairing by the ITA in No. 63 Stefano D’Agosino and Pietro Pampanin.  

All About the Bulldogs

The Gators match against Mississippi State will be the second time the two teams meet in this season. Their last time facing each other was at the ITA National Indoors in Dallas, Texas where the Bulldogs got the 4-1 victory over the Gators. With their win over the Gators in February, the Bulldogs are now 24-44 against Florida. There are three Bulldogs duos that are ranked by the ITA, including No. 5 Benito Sanchez Martinez and Petar Jovanovic, No. 38 Bryan Hernandez Cortes and Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes and No. 72 Michael Novansky and Mario Martinez Serrano. In singles, the ITA ranks five Bulldogs, including No. 8 Petar Jovanovic, No. 39 Mario Martinez Serrano, No. 55 Benito Sanchez Martinez, No. 92 Bryan Hernandez Cortes and No. 125 Niccolo Baroni.

Outlook on the Ospreys

The Ospreys of North Florida will close out the Gators six-match homestand as the second match of the double header on Sunday. The Ospreys do not currently hold a team or individual rankings, but offer another strong instate contest for the Gators. UNF is 8-5 on the season and is 0-5 against the Gators in program history.
