Men’s Tennis Faces Clemson and Georgia Tech
TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State men’s tennis team starts its road trip with a stop in South Carolina to take on No. 34 Clemson (5-9, 1-3 ACC) Friday at 5:30 p.m. before concluding the weekend in Atlanta against No.55 Georgia Tech (8-6, 0-4 ACC) Sunday at noon.
The Seminoles defeated both teams last season at home. Corey Craig led singles play for Florida State against Clemson, completing a monster performance with a crushing 6-2, 6-1 straight-set win on court one to secure the second team point of the match. Craig won the fifth ACC match of his career and his eighth ranked singles win of the season. Erik Schiessl, who has been a hot spot for Florida State this year, claimed his 10th career singles victory in his first season as a Seminole against the Tigers.
FSU handed Georgia Tech a 4-2 loss at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center, where Azariah Rusher returned to the singles lineup and completed an incredible performance on court six. Rusher won 12 of the 15 games played and defeated his opponent for a second-consecutive season at the time. Schiessl gave the Yellow Jackets a battle after overcoming a first-set tiebreaker loss with a 6-2 second frame and won five consecutive games in the third set to clinch the match.
Leading the way in doubles this season is the pairing of No. 17 Luis Felipe Miguel and Schiessl. The duo has posted a 15-4 overall record after stringing together a nine-match win streak.
Florida State enters the weekend following a hard-fought 4-3 loss Sunday against No. 4 Wake Forest, the defending national champions. Craig beat the No. 18 player in the nation, and teammates Rusher and Justin Lyons also earned wins against the Demon Deacons.
