McCray V’s 30 Points Propels Florida State Past Cal in the ACC Tournament
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Robert McCray V scored a season-high 30 points to lead four Seminoles to finish with double-digit points in the Florida State men’s basketball team’s 95-89 victory against the Cal Golden Bears in the second round of the ACC tournament. McCray V’s 30 points eclipsed his previous season-high of 29 points, which he scored twice this season. He also recorded a game-high eight assists and has led the Seminoles in that category 28 times this season.
Florida State improved to 18-14 on the season. Cal fell to 21-11.
Florida State’s 95 points marked the most points they scored in any ACC game this season, eclipsing the previous total of 92, which they scored against Virginia Tech on February 14, 2026. The Seminoles’ 95 points also mark the points scored by a Florida State team in ACC tournament history.
McCray V became the first Seminole player to score 30 or more points in an ACC tournament game since Jamir Watkins scored 34 points against Virginia Tech on March 13, 2024.
With Florida State’s victory, Luke Loucks became the third head coach in Florida State history to win their first ACC tournament game.
Florida State made 13 3-point shots and shot .460 percent from behind the arc (13-28). The Seminoles have now made 10 or more 3-point shots in six of the last eight games against an ACC opponent.
The Seminoles took every opportunity from their opponents’ turnovers. Florida State forced Cal into 12 turnovers, eight of which were steals. Florida State made the most of these opportunities and scored 20 points off turnovers.
As they did in the first matchup of the season against Cal, the Seminoles controlled the paint, outscoring the Golden Bears 40-34 in the painted area.
Alex Steen opened the scoring for the Seminoles with a put-back layup.
Cal opened the game with a 9-2 lead with 16:16 to play in the first half.
McCray V would then score five straight points to cut the lead to four, 9-5.
The Seminoles would go on an 18-2 run to take a 28-15 lead with eight minutes to play in the first half.
Florida State’s first lead came At the 12:13 mark of the first half, thanks to a made 3-point shot from Kobe MaGee. Florida State would not relinquish the lead from that point.
MaGee scored 13 points and made four 3-point shots. He has made four or more 3-point shots five times this season.
The Seminoles led the Golden Bears 46-32 at the half.
Chauncey Wiggins opened the second half for the Seminoles, draining a 3-point shot.
Wiggins would finish the game with 14 points and shot .500 percent from the 3-point line (2-4). He has recorded double-digit points in five consecutive games.
Florida State held a 51-39 lead with 17:19 remaining in the game. Lajae Jones would throw down a dunk that would spark a 10-2 run and put the Seminoles ahead 61-41.
Jones finished his night with 15 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. He has finished in double figures in three consecutive games and has grabbed multiple steals 13 times this season.
A late push from the Golden Bears would cut Florida State’s lead to eight, 94-86, with just 20 seconds remaining in the game.
McCray V would sink a clutch free throw with 17 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Seminoles.
Florida State advances to play the Duke Blue Devils in the quarterfinals of the ACC tournament on Thursday, March 12, at 7:00 pm in the Spectrum Center.
