On his evaluations of the team’s performance this weekend…
“I told our guys beforehand, ‘you are going to get a really good effort from (Oakland).’ I liked their starter (Ben Green). He matched up against us well, and I knew he was going to give us some fits. To see two of your veterans – Tre Phelps goes up there and extends hit hitting streak and gets the first home run. Then him and Daniel (Jackson) go back-to-back. That is what this lineup can do at times. I thought it was really good. They mixed and matched all day. I thought they did a really good job. You tip your cap to them. They did a good job of coming in and inducing us to pop up and roll over. We will work on. It will be good for us. You want to win every game, run rule or big win. There are also those tight ones. You have to get ready for league play. You have to check heartbeat and see where things are. I thought our guys stayed calm. Justin Byrd is cool out there. He went out there, and when I made that visit, he said ‘I’ve got this.’ That is why you are in the game, and I thought it was good for us.”

On how this year is different for him…
“Last year, I had a good bit of innings. This year I feel like I’m taking more of a leadership role with the pitching side being able to take on going out there and finishing a game. I hope it’s eye opening and a lot of guys can go out there and have the confidence and finish a game.”

On the team’s defense…
“We take a lot of pride in it, as of late. We’ve got guys moving around, we’ve got defensive substitutions everywhere and people coming through in the right ways. You can put anybody everywhere. We’ve got a lot of versatility there. It’s been well-placed.
