Wiggins Leads Seminoles Over Cal In ACC Play, 63-61
Florida State improved to 9-12 and 2-6 in the ACC. The Golden Bears fell to 15-6 and 3-5 in ACC play.
The Seminoles dominated the paint throughout the game, outscoring Cal 32-14 in that category. The Seminoles scored 16 points in the paint in each half. The Seminoles’ bench also played a pivotal part in the Seminoles’ victory as they scored 15 points to Cal’s six. Florida State’s bench has outscored every ACC opponent it has faced.
The Seminoles opened the game on a 6-0 run thanks to consecutive 3-point makes from Wiggins.
Wiggins scored 13 of his 18 points in the first half, including three made 3-point shots. His 13 points were the most points he has scored in a single half as a Florida State Seminole. He has now made three or more 3-point shots in seven games this season.
Cal jumped out to a six-point, 14-8, lead with 13:36 to go in the first half. The Seminoles responded with an 8-0 run to take a 16-14 lead. Sophomore AJ Swinton scored six of the eight points during that run.
Swinton made two 3-point shots and tied his career-high of four rebounds in a season-high 24 minutes. Swinton’s two made 3-point shots marked the first time he made multiple 3-point shots in his expanded role.
Cal held a slight 19-18 lead at the 7:29 mark. Over the next seven and a half minutes, the Seminoles would outscore the Golden Bears 18-4 and grab a 13-point lead.
Florida State held a 36-23 lead at halftime. The Golden Bears’ 23 points were the fewest they have scored in a half this season.
McCray V opened the second half with a layup to extend Florida State’s lead to 15. The Seminoles’ 15-point lead was the largest lead they have had in an ACC game this season.
The Golden Bears would cut the lead to seven, 41-34, with 14:40 to play. McCray V scored three straight points to extend the lead back to double-digits, 44-34.
Cal would take a one-point lead, 59-58, with 3:45 remaining in the game. The Seminoles did not hesitate to respond and regained the lead, 60-59, thanks to a layup from McCray V.
McCray V scored seven of his 11 points in the second half.
Wiggins made a jump shot to put the Seminoles ahead by two, 62-60, with just under three minutes to play. Jones sank a clutch free throw and grabbed the game-sealing defensive rebound at the buzzer.
Jones finished his night with nine points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jones has now led the team in rebounding in five straight games.
The Seminoles return to the Tucker Center on Saturday, January 31, to take on the Stanford Cardinal at 6:00 p.m.
