Thiam, Walker Named ACC Performers of the Week
TALLAHASSEE – Florida State indoor track and field student-athletes Nafy Thiam and Shenese Walker were named ACC Performers of the Week on Tuesday following their season opening performances at the Jimmy Carnes Invite.
Thiam was named the Rookie of the Week to become the first person in program history to receive the award on the women’s side, while Walker earned the Track Performer of the Week.
“Shenese had a tremendous offseason, and we are looking for great things for her this season,” said head coach Matt Kane. “Starting with a personal-best is a great start. Nafy’s first meet was a great one. She is leading the ACC and broke the U20 Belgium record. Surely a sign of great things to come for her at FSU.”
True freshman Thiam wasted no time putting her name into multiple record books over the weekend after placing second overall in the women’s shotput with the second-farthest throw in program history at 16.62-meters. Thiam also placed first among all conference opponents in the event, while setting a new U20 Belgium National record on her second attempt in the event. Her mark ranks first in the ACC and 12th in the nation.
“Nafy’s dedication and hard work from the fall really showed this past weekend,” said assistant coach Luke Bryant. “She’s a tremendous talent with a promising future in the sport.”
Walker opened her final collegiate season with a win in the women’s 200 with a new personal-best and the fifth-fastest time in program history at 23.15. Walker’s time stands first in the ACC and third in the nation.
“For a season opener, that was exactly what we wanted to see,” said assistant coach Tony Davis. “Shenese trusted the model, executed it well by opening with a personal-best and set a strong tone for the year. We’re excited for what’s ahead.”
