TALLAHASSEE — Four years in, and Kobe MaGee isn’t just playing basketball: he’s composing it. The senior guard has found a rhythm that’s equal parts skill, confidence, and creativity.

And lately, the court has become the place where all of it comes together.

MaGee has scored in double figures in each of his first four career ACC games, is averaging 14.8 points and 2.5 rebounds, while shooting nearly 40 percent from the 3-point line in those four games.  He has made 13 free throw shots against four of the top teams in the conference.

MaGee and the Seminoles play host to Wake Forest in an important ACC game on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 with Kevin Brown and Randolph Childress behind the microphones. Jeff Culhane and Adrian Crawford will have the radio call on the Seminole Sports Network.

The Seminoles’ game against the Deacons has been designated as a Spear It Rewards game for Florida State students. The students will get double redeemable reward points for attending the game between the ACC opponents. A special halftime half-court shot presented by Glory Days Grill will give a student the opportunity to win free wings for a year.

“I’m pretty comfortable on the court,” said MaGee, who was a guest on the Inside Seminole Basketball television show earlier this week. “I trust my training and my teammates. Talking with my teammates these last couple of weeks has allowed me to get more comfortable around them. It’s helping me be the best version of me. I hope that I can bring that out of other people as well.”

MaGee was the first commitment to head coach Luke Loucks after entering the transfer portal in March.

He arrived at Florida State following an outstanding three-year career at Drexel University in Philadelphia. He played in 88 career games, scored 714 career points, and shot nearly 40 percent from the 3-point line. MaGee led Drexel in scoring with a career-high 14.0 points per game scoring average while shooting .439 from outside the arc as a junior during the 2024-25 season. MaGee made 105 3-point shots in his last two seasons at Drexel.

“Kobe MaGee has had a stretch here where he has really helped us with his production,” said Loucks. “We need Kobe to make shots for us to have a chance. Kobe can shoot the ball at such a high level.”

While MaGee is nationally known for his abilities on the basketball court, his teammates and coaches know that he is an incredibly well-rounded and mature individual.

The native of Allentown, Pa., enjoys collecting records (actual vinyl records), studying different types of art, and watching movies.

MaGee’s album catalog includes Al Green, Lauryn Hill, Drake, Erykah Badu, and Michael Jackson among many others.

“The album Views by Drake is probably my favorite,” said MaGee. “It’s a smooth album. You know what you are going to get when you listen to it.”

He is also an accomplished sketch artist who compares his senior season to his affinity for drawing.

“I would describe my senior season as a sketch right now,” said MaGee. “There are some lines that are blurred, but you can still see that there is a masterpiece waiting to be completed.”

His favorite movie is Soul, a 2020 Pixar movie that follows an aspiring pianist whose life is upended after an accident sends him into a coma. As his soul becomes separated from his body, he races to reunite the two in time for the biggest musical opportunity of his life.

Finding a person’s individual spark is one of the themes of the movie.

That’s the meaning MaGee derives from the movie.

 

“My spark is to help my teammates along the way,” said MaGee. “Having them all on the same page really gets me into a rhythm.”

MaGee, who will earn his bachelor’s degree from Florida State this summer, has been in quite a rhythm as a Seminole.

He’s Florida State’s third-leading scorer, second in 3-point shots made, and tied for second in steals. He’s also ranked among the top players in the ACC in 3-point shooting and steals.

“What we first saw in Kobe was his incredible desire to be successful in all facets of his life,” said Loucks. “His progress as a player, and his success academically, made it evident to our staff that he was the kind of individual we wanted in our program from day one. Kobe is one of our leaders on the court, in the locker room, and in the classroom.”

Loucks has watched MaGee’s improvement through the first 17 games of his career as a Seminole.

“We brought Kobe in to be a catch and shoot guy, who can do some other things on the floor,” said Loucks. “Kobe has put in a ton of work in the gym. He’s got to be able to knock down shots at a high level and that’s what he is doing. Our offense is generated on attacking the basket, attacking the paint, and when the help comes, kicking it out for catch and shoot three’s. We are going to need Kobe to continue to play at the level he’s playing at in the ACC.”

MaGee is a true believer in the essence of the sport of basketball and that the sport he has chosen to excel in is a microcosm for how he lives his life.

MaGee continues to work to get his shooting stroke to where he wants it to be, and is always working on improving his overall game.

“My improvement on defense is something our fans might not notice right away,” said MaGee. “I do take pride and think I am making subtle improvements in that part of my game.”

As MaGee composes his basketball career, he’s also sketching the rhythm of the future he’s determined to create.
