MaGee, Somerville lead Seminoles in loss at Syracuse
Florida State fell to 7-10 and 0-4 in ACC play. Syracuse improved to 12-5 and 3-1 in the ACC.
MaGee has led the team in scoring two times this season.
McCay V opened the scoring with a layup to put Florida State up early.
After Syracuse made a 3-point shot, the Seminoles would go on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to open an 11-3 lead. McCray V scored five of the nine points over that span.
In addition to McCray V’s 14 points, he recorded four rebounds and a team-high six assists. He has led the team in assists in nine straight games and 15 times this season.
Florida State held an 18-17 lead at the 13:59 mark of the first half. Somerville made a 3-point shot, and Steen finished a second-chance layup to extend the lead to five, 23-17 with 12:53 to play.
Steen scored eight points and was a perfect 4-4 from the field. Steen finished the game with four rebounds, eclipsing the 800 career rebounds plateau.
The Seminoles led 30-28 with 6:20 remaining in the first half. MaGee made back-to-back 3-point shots to spark a quick 6-2 run and extend the lead to six points, 36-30, with less than five minutes to play.
From that point, Syracuse would go on a 10-0 run to swing momentum in their favor and took a 40-36 lead with 2:28 in the first half.
Steen beat the halftime buzzer to cut the Syracuse lead to three.
The Seminoles entered the half trailing 43-40.
After the Orange scored seven straight points to begin the second half, MaGee scored five consecutive points, cutting the Syracuse lead to 5, 50-45.
The Seminoles trailed by 10, 57-47, at the 16:38 mark of the second half. Two free throws from freshman Thomas Bassong sparked an 8-0 run to cut the Syracuse lead to two.
With 12:02 left in the game, Syracuse led the Seminoles 64-61. Florida State would go on a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the second half, 67-64, with under 11 minutes to go.
The turning point of the game came with 9:47 left to play in the game. Florida State led the Orange 69-68. Syracuse would go on an 8-0 run to take a 76-69 lead at the under-eight timeout.
The Seminoles trailed 88-79 at the 3:15 mark of the second half. MaGee converted on a second-chance layup, and McCray V made a free throw to cut the Syracuse lead to four, 88-82, with 2:30 remaining.
Donnie Freeman led all scorers with 25 points and eight rebounds. Freeman has led Syracuse in scoring for four consecutive games and eight times this season.
Florida State returns to the Tucker Center to take on Wake Forest on January 17 at 6:00 p.m.
