ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia track and field swept the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) men and women’s national athlete of the week honors following the indoor season-opening Clemson Invitational.

Who Won?: Bulldog senior sprinter Dejanea Oakley was named the Women’s NCAA Division I National Athlete of the Week while freshman Jonathan Simms garnered Men’s National Athlete of the Week accolades during his career debut.

Last Bulldogs To Win USTFCCCA National Weekly Awards: Aaliyah Butler was the last Lady Bulldog to win a national weekly honor on March 3 of last year.  On the men’s side, Christopher Morales Williams was the last USTFCCCA winner on Feb. 26, 2024.  This marks the seventh all-time indoor women’s national weekly honor and the fifth in men’s history.

Oakley, a native of Clarendon, Jamaica, ran a school record and 2026 world leading 35.94 to win the 300-meter dash and move to No. 4 on the all-time collegiate list.  She became the third-best Jamaican performer in the event with her weekend performance.

Simms, a native of McKinney, Texas, made his Bulldog debut by winning the 400m with a World Under-20 indoor record 44.62, leaving the rest of the Clemson field behind by more than two seconds.  His time puts him No. 4 on the collegiate all-time list, as the current world leader for 2026 and No. 2 in Georgia’s all-time record books.  Simms also ran a 44.35 during his leg on the 4x400m relay to help Georgia take second place.

What’s Up Next?: Georgia will return to action at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on January 23-24.  Another group will also return to Clemson for the Orange & Purple Invite.
