December Homestand Continues Sunday with 2 p.m. Tip vs. West Georgia
The Gators most recent result was a 75-61, Dec. 7 win over South Alabama which saw SEC Player of the Year candidate Liv McGill score 32 points, including 17 in the second quarter. McGill’s scoring burst helped turn a five-point Florida deficit through 10 minutes of play into a 13-point Gators’ lead at the intermission. Freshman “Nidi” Yiech added her first career double-double in the victory with 14 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
McGill now has three games of 30 or more points this season making her one of only two players this year in Division I Women’s Basketball with a trio of 30 points games to their credit (Iowa State’s Audi Brooks). Through games of Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Minnesota native ranks second in the nation in scoring (27.3 ppg), sixth in steals per game (4.22) and 33rd in assists per game (5.4).
Me’Arah O’Neal’s 14.1 points per game, and Laila Reynolds’ 13.4 points per game give the Gators a trio of double-digit scorers.
The NCAA unveiled its initial NET rankings on Nov. 30, and Florida began the season ranked 40th in the nation. Heading into Sunday’s game against the Wolves, the Gators boast a NET ranking of 48.
West Georgia is currently in year two of its five-year transition period from Division II to Division I, and this is the first-ever meeting between the programs.
The Wolves made five appearances in the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Tournament, and won the Gulf South Tournament Championship as recently as 2024. Last year, West Georgia went 13-17 in its first season of Division I competition, including 7-11 in the Atlantic Sun Conference
The Wolves are 4-3 so far in 2025-26, and led by a quartet of double-figure scorers in Asia Donald (17.0 ppg), Jasmine Jones (15.4), Sydne Tolbert (13.3) and Destiny Jones (11.0). Grace O’Gara nearly gives West Georgia a quintet of double-digit performers as she averages 9.7 points per game.
What the Wolves lack at the moment is bench depth as those five players account for 78 percent of the team’s minutes, 86 percent of its field goal attempts, and 91 percent of its points.
The Wolves and Gators have just one like opponent to date during non-conference play—Georgia Tech. Florida upended the Yellow Jackets 64-56 at the Grand Cayman Classic over Thanksgiving weekend, while West Georgia topped Tech 69-60 on Nov. 19.
West Georgia (4-3)
A FLORIDA WIN WOULD …
- Improve the Gators record to 10-2 on the year.
- Improve Florida’s record to 7-0 at home on the year.
- Run the Gators’ streak of consecutive non-conference home wins to 14, which would be the seventh longest such streak in program history.
- Be the team’s ninth consecutive win at home, which would tie them for the sixth longest such streak in program history.
