Intoxicated Driver Traveling with Child Stopped by OCSO Following Hit and Run Crash

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has charged a man with numerous traffic violations including DUI, as well as child neglect, after a hit and run on Okaloosa Island Saturday night.
A motorist on Okaloosa Island reported a white Ford F-150 pickup truck hit his vehicle and drove away. He had gotten the truck’s license number, so using Flock, deputies were able to get an image of the truck. An OCSO deputy in Destin spotted the truck on Highway 98. As he followed him, he noticed signs of impairment. He attempted a traffic stop, which the driver disregarded. The pickup truck driver continued on at 23 mph before eventually stopping in the middle lane of Highway 98 near Indian Bayou Trail. The driver refused commands to get out of the car. As deputies approached, a young child got out of the back door and walked towards them. The child was unharmed.
The driver, 25-year old Luis Montoya, was found to be intoxicated. Deputies also learned he had struck another vehicle in Destin.
Montoya is now charged with DUI, hit and run leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, child neglect, resisting an officer without violence, and resisting an officer fleeing lights and sirens. He is currently in in the Okaloosa County jail with a hold for Immigration.
