Noles Sink 15 Threes, Down Nicholls 89-64
TALLAHASSEE – A phenomenal performance from beyond the arc would solidify the Florida State women’s basketball team’s (3-1) defeat of Nicholls State (1-2) by a final score of 89-64 on Wednesday morning in the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.
The meeting was the first ever between both programs and also served as Florida State’s annual Education Day game.
Senior guard Jasmine Shavers put up a team-best and season-high 28 points, going 9-of-17 from the field and 6-of-10 from three, tying her career high. She would also add six rebounds and three assists.
Junior guard Sole Williams scored a career-high 23 points and tied her career best in three-pointer field goals made with five. Her five steals led the team and was a career high.
Junior center Pania Davis notched her first double-double of her Seminole career, totaling 13 points with 10 rebounds. Her three blocks against the Colonels is also a career-high, besting her previous high of two against Florida A&M.
Florida State shot 48 percent from the field (32-of-66) and a strong 44 percent from distance (15-of-34). The 15 triples are tied for the second-most in program history, just behind the school record of 18, set last season against Miami (Jan. 19, 2025).
Florida State got off to a slow start as Nicholls State led 23-13 at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The momentum picked up for Florida State in the second quarter, as Williams and Shavers nailed triples on back-to-back possessions, leading the charge and chipping away at the deficit. FSU closed the quarter on a 13-2 run, tying the game 35-35 going into halftime.
Both teams traded scores at the start of the third quarter, but two more threes from Williams put much-needed distance on the board. Shavers added five points herself across the final three minutes of the frame and back-to-back layups from Williams contributed to a pulverizing 11-0 scoring run by the Seminoles. Florida State led a strong 63-48 going into the final quarter.
The pace of play remained with the Seminoles to close out the contest. FSU sank seven more 3-pointers across the final 10 minutes, with junior guard Emma Risch and Shavers recording three triples each. Freshman guard Mari Gerton would get her name on the board with a wide-open look from the top of the arc, cashing in her lone attempt of the morning.
Alongside the offense, the defense excelled. Florida State out rebounded Nicholls State 41-31 and generated 21 turnovers from the Colonels. Seven blocks and 11 steals denied Nicholls State from replicating their first quarter momentum and demonstrated the jump in intensity seen in the second half of play.
The Seminoles will remain at home to face Indiana on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. for their Military Appreciation game. Former Seminole Natasha Howard will have her jersey retired during the game.
