Seminoles Beat Wake Forest – Florida State University
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State football team beat Wake Forest 42-7 on Saturday night at Doak Campbell Stadium.
The Seminoles (4-4, 1-4 ACC) scored two touchdowns in each of the second, third and fourth quarters while holding the Demon Deacons (5-3, 2-3 ACC) to one fourth-quarter score after they crossed midfield just twice in the opening 50-plus minutes.
Quarterback Tommy Castellanos was 12-for-16 passing for 271 yards with a touchdown, and he also had a rushing score. Running back Gavin Sawchuk also scored two touchdowns, both rushing.
Wide receiver Duce Robinson had a game-high 148 yards receiving on five catches with a touchdown, while running back Samuel Singleton Jr. also scored as part of a team-best 91 yards rushing on 14 attempts.
FSU had 421 yards offensively, 271 passing and 150 rushing, while holding Wake Forest to 247 yards, 162 through the air and just 85 on the ground. The Seminoles averaged 7.4 yards per play and committed just four penalties in the game.
Defensively, Florida State forced two turnovers which led to 14 points. Defensive back Earl Little Jr. had seven tackles with an interception and a forced fumble. Defensive back Ja’Bril Rawls recovered a fumble in the win.
Florida State took a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter on a six-yard touchdown run by Castellanos. The score on third-and-5 came with 13:44 left in the half. A 65-yard pass from Castellanos to Robinson on third down highlighted the six-play, 80-yard drive and came after the Seminole defense forced Wake to punt for a second time in two drives to begin the game.
FSU’s defense did not allow the Demon Deacon offense to cross their own 37-yard line on their next two possessions to set up another Florida State touchdown drive.
Singleton Jr. ran it in for 10 yards with 57 seconds remaining in the first half to punctuate a drive that he started with a 27-yard rush. Castellanos also kept the drive alive with a 30-yard completion to tight end Randy Pittman Jr. on third-and-13.
The seven-play, 72-yard drive in 2:29 made it 14-0 before Wake’s quarterback was sacked to end the half.
Wake Forest entered FSU territory for just the second time on its first drive of the second half, and advanced past the 43-yardline for the first time. With the help of a fourth-down conversion, the Deamon Decons got to the Seminole 12. However, after a false start penalty, a fumbled snap gave Florida State the ball, and with the penalty the Seminoles took over at Wake’s 47.
Florida State took advantage of the short field and made it 21-0 with 4:59 left in the third quarter. A one-yard run from Sawchuk capped the seven-play, 47-yard drive in more than three minutes that included a 29-yard pass from Castellanos to Robinson on third down.
The defense got a stop on fourth down at Wake’s 41, and the offense needed just two plays to make it 28-0. A 39-yard pass from Castellanos to Robinson got FSU to the 1-yardline for Sawchuk to run it in with 1:45 left in the third. The two-play drive for 40 yards took 24 seconds off the clock.
An interception set up another Florida State drive that started on the Wake Forest 20, and again it was a quick drive that extended the lead to 35-0. Pittman Jr. ran it in from seven yards out six seconds into the fourth quarter to punctuate the 65-second, 20-yard drive that took four plays.
A punt sent up a third quick touchdown drive, but this one started at FSU’s 22 and took 78 yards in 1:44. A 66-yard pass from Castellanos to wide receiver Micahi Danzy got it started, and three plays later, Castellanos found Robinson in the endzone to make it 42-0 with 11:51 left in regulation.
Wake Forest avoided the shutout with a six-yard touchdown pass with 6:49 remaining to make it 42-7.
The Demon Deacons looked to add a second score in the final seconds, but time expired with WF on FSU’s nine.
