Auguste and Aces Power No. 25 Gators Past Georgia in Straight Sets

ATHENS, Ga. – The No. 25 Florida volleyball team earned its second consecutive road sweep on Friday night, defeating Georgia, 25-22, 25-20, 25-19, to hand the Bulldogs just their second home conference loss of the season inside Stegeman Coliseum.

Sophomore middle blocker Jaela Auguste posted a career-best .722 hitting percentage, finishing with a match-high 14 kills. The reigning SEC Freshman of the Year also delivered three aces and added two blocks to total 18.0 points in the sweep.

Florida held Georgia to a .165 hitting percentage, their second-lowest of the season and limited the Bulldogs at the net, as they finished with a season-low 3.0 blocks.

Florida out-served Georgia 8-2, with Auguste and Vidacic recorded all three of their aces in the second set alone, while Hutson and Stucky each added one in the opening frame.

Offensively, the Gators hit .288 as a team and totaled 43 kills, as setter Alexis Stucky dished out 32 assists. Jordyn Byrd tallied nine kills, while Alec Rothe hit .467 with eight. Aniya Madkin added six and Stucky, Milica Vidacic and Kira Hutson each contributed two apiece.

At the net, the Gators’ block came alive late, recording five of their seven total blocks in the third set. Rothe led the way with four, followed by Byrd and Stucky with two each and Madkin adding one.

Defensively, Florida’s backcourt effort was balanced, with eight different Gators contributing to the stat sheet. Hutson led with nine digs, while freshman libero Lily Hayes and senior defensive specialist Emily Canaan followed with eight apiece. Stucky added seven and Ella Vogel (2), Byrd, Rothe and Vidacic combined for five to round out Florida’s 37 total digs.

Georgia’s Bianna Munoneke finished with 13 kills and hit .379 to lead the way offensively for the Bulldogs.

How It Happened
Set 1

  • The opening set featured 11 ties and three lead changes. After starting the set down 1-5, Florida scored five-straight points from kills and a block from Auguste and Byrd to take a 6-5 lead. The teams battled point-for-point throughout the middle of the frame, but the Gators all-around effort gave them a 15-13 advantage heading into the media timeout. Following the break, Georgia evened the score at 15 after back-to-back kills from MK Patten, but attacks from Auguste and Rothe and an ace from Stucky pushed Florida to a 19-17 advantage and force a Georgia timeout. Out of the huddle, the Bulldogs went on a 5-2 run to take a 22-21 lead, but Florida responded with a 4-0 run following a timeout, as an ace from Hutson secured the 25-22 set-one win in set one.

Set 2

  • An ace from Auguste gave the Gators an early 5-2 lead and Florida maintained a steady two-point advantage before Vidacic fired off three-straight aces to extend Florida’s lead to five (12-7) and force a Georgia timeout. The Gators continued to apply pressure from the service line, as Aguste dropped her second ace of the set extend the lead to 16-11. The Bulldogs battled back late and closed the gap to three (23-20), but Auguste’s third ace of the set sealed the 25-20 victory to hand Florida a 2-0 match lead.

Set 3

  • After exchanging the opening points of set three, Florida scored four-straight to jump ahead to a 10-6 lead and force a Bulldog timeout. Out of the huddle, Kills from Vidacic and Auguste helped the Gators maintain a four-point advantage and a kill from Rothe followed by a block from the sophomore and Byrd extended UF’s lead to 16-11. After using its second timeout of the second, Georgia responded with a 6-3 scoring run to close the gap to 17-19, but a block from Stucky and Rothe help Florida keep its momentum and made it match point, where Byrd put down the final kill to secure the 25-19 third-set win and complete the sweep.
