The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of financial losses in excess of 1.1 million dollars from two separate victims due to fraudulent cryptocurrency investment scams during the month of October alone.

These scams often begin when victims are contacted through social media by someone promoting what sounds like a new or exclusive cryptocurrency investment opportunity.

The scammer may then communicate through “WhatsApp” or “Telegram” or other messaging apps, and request money via bank wire or cryptocurrency exchange accounts.

Victims are often shown fake websites that appear to display large profits, but when they try to withdraw their money, they can’t. They are told they must first pay additional “taxes” or “fees” or “legal expenses”. Unfortunately the money is never returned.

Protect Yourself and Your Money!

* Be EXTREMELY cautious about unsolicited investment offers online.

* NEVER send money to anyone you’ve only met on the internet.

* Verify that you are dealing with a LEGITIMATE AND LICENSED cryptocurrency exchange or broker.

* IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE – IT IS!
