ATLANTA, Ga.  – Sophomore Freya Russell finished in a tie for sixth place in the individual standings, and the Florida State women’s golf team finished in fourth place in the team standings in the rain shortened first round of the East Lake Cup at the East Lake Golf Course. Because of incredibly inclement weather – described as a monsoon of rain – Monday’s first round of stroke play was shortened to nine holes.

The Seminoles begin match play as the No. 4 seed and will face No. 1 seeded Oregon in the first round of match play on Tuesday. No. 2 seeded Southern California will face No. 3 seeded Northwestern in the second of two match play events on Tuesday. The championship and third place matches will be played on Wednesday.

Russell finished with a 1 over par score of 37. She was one of 11 golfers in the field who finished under par, at par, or within one stroke of par. The Seminole sophomore birdied two of her final four holes – including on her final hole of the day – to finish in the top six of the individual standings.

Dianna Lee of Northwestern won the individual stroke play championship with a 2-under par score of 34. She carded three birdies on her first eight holes of the day to win her first career individual championship. Kiara Romero carded a 1 under par 35 and finished in second place in the individual standings. Lee and Romero were the only two golfers to finish under in the rain-soaked and shortened first round of play.
