McCray V and Jones Lead Florida State to an 88-54 win over Florida A&M
TALLAHASSEE – Robert McCray V and Lajae Jones scored 15 points each, and Florida State totaled 15 steals in an 88-54 victory over Florida A&M in an exhibition game at the Donald L. Tucker Center. The Seminoles led by 40 during the second half and never trailed in the first game between the two teams in 34 years. The game served as the final exhibition contest for both teams as the 2025 season approaches on November 3 against South Florida for Florida A&M and on November 4 at home against Alcorn State for Florida State.
Florida A&M head coach and Seminole legend Charlie Ward had his Seminole basketball jersey (No. 12) honored and hung in the rafters of the Tucker Center in an emotional pre-game ceremony. He has now had both his Seminole basketball and football jerseys (No. 17) honored at Florida State.
Florida State scored the first six points of the game on 3-point shots by Kobe MaGee and Lajae Jones and never relinquished the lead. The Rattlers got to within one point, 12-11, at the 13:43 mark of the first half on a 3-pointer by Kaleb Washington. The Seminoles outscored FAMU by a 17-8 margin over the next six minutes to increase their lead to 10 at 29-19.
MaGee finished the game with 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals.
McCray scored 15 points to go along with a team-high tying six rebounds, a team-high four steals and two assists. Jones finished with 15 points, five rebounds, and two steals.
Florida State led at halftime 45-25, thanks to a 25-4 run in the last 10 minutes of the first half. The Seminoles would extend their lead in the second half, beginning the half on a 14-2 run to increase their lead to 59-27 with 14:05 remaining in the game.
Chancey Wiggins and Cam Miles scored 11 points each for the victorious Seminoles who finished with four players in double figure scoring.
Wiggins scored nine of his 11 points from behind the arc, as he led the team with three 3-point shots made. Miles added three steals, two assists and two rebounds in 23 minutes of playing time.
Thomas Bassong scored nine points and as he made each of his three free throws and added one rebound in his second career exhibition game. Alier Maluk scored seven points and recorded six rebounds, which was tied for a team-high, and added one blocked shot.
Alex Steen, MaGee, and McCray V tied for team-high honors with six rebounds.
In earning 15 steals, Florida State forced 25 turnovers by FAMU and totaled 27 points off turnovers.
Florida State outscored FAMU on points off of turnovers (27-14), points scored in the paint (34-18), second chance points (7-6), fastbreak points (13-16) and points off of the bench (29-12).
Tyler Shirley scored a game-high 25 points to lead the Rattlers. Anquan Boldin Jr, the son of Seminole football great Anquan Boldin scored four points and added a game-high tying seven rebounds.
